i had a car that shredded a couple of alternator belts, when i used the factory mazda belt instead of the gates p.o.s. it fixed it.
material just couldn't hold up with the forces being applied?
I know it's a late post but my '89 FC burned off 2 belts with 3 weeks this past winter. Make sure you do NOT over tighten the belt. If you do it will rip it to shreds in a matter of a couple of weeks. Make sure there is some slack but not enough where it will slip and fall off. Personally it doesn't sound like to need the double pulley to me.
