The air pump does more than just actuate the VDI solenoids. I'm unsure of the specifics, but I do know that if you haven't removed your cat, it will get clogged and burnt without the air pump. I guess the airpump also pumps air into the exhaust to dilute the gasses so they won't destroy the cat.

can i remove the vdi? or use the ish off of an s4, therefore i could get rid of the airpump, acv, etc.....
