but on a serious note the lights from a 89-91 look a lot better then the 86-88 light. and yes they just pop in, u can find em cheap at almost any junk yard. oh but u will need an extra piece around the lisence plate, at least thats what i heard.

There is no difference at all between the 89-91 JDM taillights and the 89-91 USDM taillights. I heard somewhere that the JDM ones have a rear fog light like Audi and BMW do, but I'm skeptical on that.
Oh, and please god dont install any taillights other than factory onto an RX-7. If you want to be "different", modify the cars looks, but make it look better. Most people modifying cars looks today go for tacky rice crap apparently, so be different and make it look GOOD.
Heres an example

Not many people have a widebody TII, now hes got a different car that looks good and can fit wider tire under it.
Now that I have gone on my wild tangent against rice boys, just get the 89-91 style lights off any USDM RX-7, you wont have to pay 60 bucks shipping from Japan, and you get the same lights.
I don't suppose it's too much to try and get you to remove the dragon graphics on the side doors?
