Sooo,,, Here's yet another carb issue tread.

1984 FB w/ FC 13B, carbed w/ Holley 600 (1850-2).

When sitting at a light, idle is fine. Light changes, normal launch. The result is like the Hollywood social-scene.

Breaking up, left, right and center.

I've found that dragging the clutch juuuust a little, to keep the revs from 15-2000 makes it go. Everything else is great!

(Buddy of mine has a SR-swapped 240 and I was pulling on him at the 5# mark (this comes, of course before he started breaking up, due to fuel-issues, of his own! Gigetty.)

Tonight I yanked the carb, pulled it apart, 4-canned it with carb-cleaner, reset the throttle-plunger (the spring-screw, behind the main linkage), and put the air/flow screws to 1.5 turns out (full depth, first).

Response is 10 times better, but the load-lag is still there; just not as bad.

Anyone got this carb, that could possible give me a hand with this?? Maybe give some advice or relay their screw-depths?

Thanks, guys.

Carbs are made to dump in additional fuel besides what pulled through the Venturi when the gas pedal is mashed. If it's dumping in too much, it'll big like you mentioned. Not sure what you adjust for that though, been awhile since I've owned a carb car lol

So that's a fuel AMOUNT issue? Hm... Mebbe I should play around with the gimpy FPR (some really cheap-looking, chromey, dial-type)?

Holley isn't exactly the most helpful when trying to get advice on setting things up, either.

Basically, I did this (while carb was off and apart):

  • Cleaned EVERYTHING;
  • Removed jet screws and reset to full-bottom, the 1.5 turns out (recommendation for 1850-2 ;zero-point' starting);
  • Held each bowl upside down (so that the floats sat against the stop) and adjusted them so that they were level (horizontal);
  • Reassembled all and re-installed;
  • Adjusted said, crappy FPR, to '4' ('5' being the least restrictive and '1' being tighter than Mother Teresa's *******);
  • Primed carb (power on and pushing primary jet diaphragm a few times, until it squirted consistently);
  • Had a friend start the car;
  • Adjusted the linkage to the primary jet diaphragm;
  • Using the idle air screws, tweaked them, a bit until idle was even (maybe an additional 1 - 1.5 turns);
  • Drove car.

Everything was better and the car was CERTAINLY more responsive, but said 1st-gear lag is still there (though not feeling as bad)...

So should I adjust the linkage to the diaphragm to not engage, as much, adjust the trim of the air bypass screws, or...?

You said you set the idle screw but did you set the a/f? The holley's are really made for v8's so I would tune them down to keep from running too rich. Personally I prefer webers but that's just IMO. Do you have a wideband and a/f gauge? That would help a lot in diagnosing so you could watch what is happening while you drive
