What type of ATF should I use to clean the carbon out of my motor?



Type F?, Some other?



With or without detergents?



And I pour it into the L2 and T2 plug holes?



Three Capfuls each, and Repeat?



How Often Can I do this without f+<king the housings up?

My local rotor guru recommends 50/50 solvent (Varsol) and ATF. I think I will try that next time.

ATF will destroy your cats if you still have them. It was originally supposed to be for junkyard engines and/or as a last resort before tearing down an engine due to low or bad compression. It has been said to help a carbon-locked engine as well since it appearantly can break up carbon. Now whether that's true or not in a room temperature engine, I have no idea. It supposedly works in a good running engine when hot due to the heat or something. But if it's a good running engine, why introduce something that could possibly screw it up?



What I do know is that my 20B had low comrpession due to excessive carbon buildup from cool plugs and luxury car driving. If it had been throttled a few times more often and the PO had used the correct plugs, it may not have been as bad. I'm going to continue to use cool plugs (FC plugs; same as what the PO used), but this time I'll drive it more like a sports car. Oh, and MMO is what I used to free up the seals and regain compression. There's no way I would have gotten these good results with ATF. I even had a bottle of it sitting right here, but I went out and purchased a bottle of MMO instead. Much better in every way. It even smells better.

 

Im just not sure about all of that, I wouldnt do it to a 20B but all of the Oldtimers swear by it for the 12a and 13b.

Hard to argue with experience.

 

Well, a 20B is the same as a 13BRE or an S5 T2 internally, so I'd go for it. With MMO that is.

No, I only cleaned everything for leaks, replaced the rings and cleaned the ports and actuators. and put the old exhaust manifold back on.

 

I havent rebuilt one yet. I have four 12a engines and thats the next thing Im going to do. I just had to get this car running good. It runs VERY strong. I was just going to do it for maintainence since I dont really know the history of the engine.

So MMO? This would be better?
