Timing Help
Newbie here...
Need some help on a 13b project. Six port motor, injectors blocked off, 4 bbl Holley, RB header and intake. The motor was a stock FI non-turbo running engine before I started. I'm using a 1st gen distributor, coils, etc. , that I salvaged from the locked up 4 port motor that came in the car.
I've read several posts on timing and set spark timing by pointing the rotor button at L1 with motor at TDC. Tried to start, no luck. Moved a tooth, now it "pops", like it wants to start. I am getting fire to all plugs, leading and trailing. Plugs are wet with ATF and fuel after a few cranks. (I poured in ATF to keep the motor wet while installing, aquiring parts, etc)
The meat of the question... With a timing light on L1, while cranking the motor, where should the marks be? I know where they need to be at 2500 rpm, but what about at cranking speed?
Any help will be appreciated. Please reference parts of the motor when refering to the timing marks correct location. (ie.. over by the top water outlet) I can't use "by the headlights" or even drivers/passenger side references as the engine is in backwards. (rear engine apllication)
Thanks.

If you can get it to flash on either of the marks, that ought to be close enough to fire. The most advanced mark is your leading while the retarded mark is your trailing. The stock leading and trailing timing is 0* and 8* ATDC respectively. I run mine with no vacuum advance at 24* & 16* BTDC.
basically the timing cranking and at idle, should be right on the leading mark on the pulley (if you're standing on the left side of the car its the one closest to you).
running over 4000rpms, timing should be 20-24btdc

I run 28 and 20 BTDC but remember if you want to run timing past around 20BTDC at 4000rpm and above you will have very advanced timing at idle, the car won't idle as good as it did and will have far too much timing between 1000 and 3000rpm. I upgraded to a full stand alone ignition system with mapable timing and my car has much more power down low (gives the perception of much more torque)
