hey plague, wooffinn here. Man in our neck of the woods there wasn't a great deal of difference between the series two's and three's. Obviously the rear light assemblies were the biggest change but there was also and front end upgrade to the bumper/air dam setup from series two on[which Mazda reckoned gained around five Hp] and adding of front side indicators. Series threes had all that and the limited had all electric options including the sunroof. Some also got headlight washers too, I think.

Mechanically series two's on scores the disc brake rear end, different swaybars and the addition of a catalytic convertor rather than mazda's thermal reactor.

Series three's also scored those wonderful two tone paint jobs and upgraded tyres and mags. Power steering was also added.

Our US brothers scored the 13B option in their equivilent gen one[called the GSL-SE] which I believe also got Mazda's dynamic intake system and fuel injection. It was the 6 port 13B.

Our Japanese brothers got a 12A turbo option by their equivilent series three and lots of very complicated electrics.

I haven't found any really well laid out sites but I'm sure if Treceb reads this, he'll know where one is.

OK, lets see. Series 2 and 3 externally are basically the same except for, i believe, the front air damn as stated by wooffinn. Internally, however, they changed. Which is the easiest way to tell them apart. The series 2 had a dash that looked like a series 1 but had subtle changes, like having the clock by the shifter and a few other "minor" things.

So if your standing next to it, and it has updated bumpers with what seems like a series 1 dash its a series 2.

I guess in australia is easier cause all series 3 received the wheels and suspension that came with the american GSLSE. They just didnt get the 13B.

hope this helps

So how do the years fall into place with the different series?

Is it 79-80 for Series 1, 81-83, for series 2, 84-85 for series 3?

Thanks

So the 10th anniversary edition in 88, is the 10th anniversary of the Rx-7, because the first one was made in 78 and sold in 79. Or was the rx-7 first sold in 78 in Japan, and 79 overseas, which is why the 10th anniversary was in 88?

Otherwise why not in 89?

Well this is kind of a wothless question, but one that I think of sometimes. Thanks again.

well, i know there are(where) a few cars that were made in 78 but sold as 79 models here in the states. And 78 was also the first year sold in japan. but, i dont think theres such thing as a 10 anniv. car in japan.

maybe you can get a better answer on the 2nd gen section.
