I have an 84 GS that I recieved not running. I replaced the dist. cap and rotor and fuel pump. I got the car running and it would idle around 4000 rpm. Saw the cat glowing, so I disconnected it (temporarily). Now the car idles around 3000 rpm and sputters when I give it gas. I looked in the carb and noticed that gas was leaking into one of the larger barrels, but could not see any coming out of the smaller ones. Should I replace the carb, or are there parts that I can look at changing? (I have an 82 complete parts car). Do I adjust the timing on a rotary the same as a piston motor? Any suggestions are appreciated.

sounds like a stuck float in the carb. i had that happen once with almost same symptoms (fuel spilling from carb, glowing cat). Be carefull. When my cat got that hot it boiled/vaporized the fuel in the fuel lines. after i shut car off i was seeing lots of bubbles coming up to my clear fuel filter by the carb. I was sooo lucky i didn't blow my self up. you can either rebuild the carb, or replace it.

Yea save yourself some headaches and rebuild the carb. You sure the cats aren't plugged as well?

I disconnected the cat after I saw it glowing. Now it's running open exhaust. I'll probably leave it open till I get the motor running good, then hook it back up and see if it's clogged. I might even pull it off and gut it. Guess I'll pull the carb off my parts car once it dries up out there and see if that fixes it.

thanks

You can also clear a stuck float by tapping the carb with a hammer while its running, dont break the thing, just wack it and see if it frees the float up. Hit the body of the carb

Anyone who has had a Holley carburator on thier car, and I have had had plenty, and still have one actually- a jeep with a AMC 360 in it, knows that when it sits, the float can get stuck, and get easily unstock with the help of a loving wack across its head, lol.
