hey guys, i have a '83 rx7 gsl and i am beleive i am missing something.

i believe the air pump is what is connected to the belt. correct?

i am missing a piece (if you are standing on the passenger side of the engine compartment) behind the air pump, below the intake manifold, but above the exhaust manifold.

there is a really shiny washer/bolt thing that says something i cant really make out because of lighting and angle. and to the left of that bolt is an opening.

it looks like the air pump has a hose that should be connected to what ever WAS there.

the car will start and run. but only if i hold the choke out, or keep reving it.

im not sure if the 2 problems are related, but i believe so.

please help.

that should've been where the egr was if i'm thinking about the same thing you're looking at. the air pump and egr aren't necessary, but the hole left by the removal of the egr needs to be capped. if your egr is removed and there's no longer a line running back to the catalytic converter from the pump then your pump is needlessly drawing power from the engine. now if you live in an area that requires emissions, that air pump has to be properly hooked up to the thermal reactor (now called a catalytic converter) to burn the excess fuel going through the engine. let me know if this helps or if you have any other questions

EGR is incorrect, these cars don't have an EGR valve.

a picture would be helpful, but the air pump is connected to an Air Control Valve. this valve assembly directs the air pump air to various places, and in addition does a couple of other things too.

anyways, it sits on the side of the intake manifold, and has passages to the exhaust, and intake, so if you just pull it off its a HUGE vacuum leak.

valve looks like this http://www.rotaryresponse.com/ebay/acvn2032.JPG

my bad, it's called the acv (air control valve). attached is the factory service manual for the fb's engine. it's on page 44 of the document
