He lives!

from the depths of college, girls, and work I rise to give birth to a true legend. One that will instill fear at the name of my creation, comet-7. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH lol...

zeroecco 11-05-2007 11:43 AM

ok I went off there, but my comet is progressing. I have run into a big snag though. The exhaust needs to pass emissions by march. which means I need to build an emissions system. I want to make it long term versus short term because lets face it I can maximize flow while at the same time cleaning my exhaust with today's technology. Does anyone know how I can setup my exhaust without re installing the air pump to make my car pass in oregon?

Well I figured it out, thanks to some math and research on cat technology. As for the car I have put it away until I have a chance to get the emission work done (it is going to cost like 800.00 to be done) so I think I am caught up. As for all of you who wish to make your 7 lighter and run legally better then follow this formula: 1 cat per rotor as close as possible to the header. This will deal with the flow issue for performance and warming up the cats. lets face it a rotary is going to dump a whole lot more heat out then a piston motor and the two cats are exposed to less gas then one would be by itself, therefore it will last longer. I haven't found any material to suggest that I am worng. Does anyone know form experience if I am wrong or not? This is an expensive endevor and I do not want to have to do it again if I can avoid it.

zeroecco 01-21-2008 01:05 AM

here are some pics of where I am at.

zeroecco 01-31-2008 03:45 PM

An update:

Tokico HP's have been purchased (all four)

RE-Speed Camber Kit has been purchased

RE-Speed Strut bar has been purchased

RB front springs have been purchased

Aeroquip fuel lines, adapters, and fittings have been purchased

New Four point harness(s) have been purchased (passengers need them too... lol https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub... )

What I now need: (does anyone know where I can find this stuff here in the NW?)

New transmission (2nd,3rd,& 4th syncros are bad)

rebiult rear end (my current rear end clunks really bad. I am about to lose it)

zeroecco 02-15-2008 11:13 AM

Got a GSL-SE rear-end coming in for the Rx this weekend and spindles as well. I think I want to do the second generation Rx-7 brake setup as well. oh yeah, Rob is rebiulding a transmission for me to. all I need for that is a short shifter. I am so excited to get this stuff done. pics will be up this weekend

Looking good. I will call you Monday with our thoughts on the strut bar.

zeroecco 02-25-2008 01:30 PM

unfortunetly the rearend deal didn't pan out. The for what ever reason decided to bail on me. Also Billy is working on the strut tower to make sure we can do it and keep it setup right. Another hang up is the emissions. I got the cat on but I went to the DEQ last week and found out that I am dumping 1959 CO's when legal is 220. I haven't added a smog pump but it looks like I will need to do that AND detune the carb to idle as low as possible and as lean as possible. I think I may do DLDFIS and retard the ignition to try and "clean" the exhaust a little more so that I can get it to pass. I thought a really good cat would do the job but it looks like I am going to need to go the extra mile on this one.

zeroecco 03-09-2008 12:23 PM

A quick update, I got a pair of Sparco Evo racing seats for 500.00, also I have got all new fuel lines from aeroquip. yeah buddy.

z-beater 03-10-2008 10:40 AM

I like those seats. They will look great in a white car.

Thanks, it always nice to hear feedback. I think I will be getting a new rearend this year at some point and with that I think I will upgrade the front brakes and get new wheels and tires. Finally the cage, CF front air dam, all new gauges, and second oil cooler. Once thats done there will be paint! A white pearl to be precisice. Then I should be d-u-n done. Next will be something a little bigger in the power range and lighter. maybe a 13b -rew ariel atom with 300 hp at 9000 rpm, lol.

zeroecco 03-11-2008 08:59 PM

here is what my new strut tower bar looks like!!! I am so excited to get this on and try it out!!

z-beater 03-12-2008 02:32 PM

Now that is nice! I have thought about making one very similar to that.

bad 83 03-12-2008 04:14 PM

Great project you have going on here. I took a little time and looked at the entire thread. I must say that I am proud of you not giving up on your car. I almost traded my Turbo FB for a '66 Mustang a couple of years ago. I am so glad that I decided to keep my car. Keep up the good work https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif.

Haven't though much about a whale tail. Right now I am trying to drop the overall lift of the car. But its something to think about.

zeroecco 03-13-2008 01:45 PM

whats does everyone thin about using brown's gas to help fuel efficency?

zeroecco 03-14-2008 01:55 PM

Just a note, RE-Speed is amazing they have done everything you could hope for from a vendor and have been really good about doing it. I give them a A+ on their work.

sure thing. I am going to call up Billy and ask about a panhard bar designs. I want the body of my rx-7 to be rock solid. Does anyone know of a good roll cage fabricator?

z-beater 03-18-2008 09:16 AM

Cagedruss is on the other forum, not sure if he is here. I believe that he is located in Oregon.

I have no personal experience but I have seen some of his work. Looks to be top notch.

zeroecco 03-23-2008 03:09 PM

There is an issue with the ignition on the car. It seems that the car is missing alot and I can;t for the life of me figure it out. I am sick of dealing with the ignition so I am going to buy a MSD 6a and get a second gen coil for it. also attached are some photos as to where I am as of now. Enjoy! Oh I will have to wait untill a later weekend to work on the suspension Because I have no idea what to do. Time to do some research!!

zeroecco 03-23-2008 03:17 PM

so more pics. Thank you Billy these parts are awesome!!!

zeroecco 03-31-2008 05:57 PM

no ones posted anything, so a update so that this thread doesn't vanish again. Everyone out there who has a weber ida 48 how do you get the B**** of a carb to get rid of the hiccup at 3000~3300 rpm?

I seem to disappear on and off again on this thread, but an update for you all. I had a engine fire... one of my friends left a rag under the car that was soaked in oil etc. and the starter lit that up like a match, just like my engine bay. Good news is that I fixed the damage. bad news is that it scared the living **** out of me. I have the shocks and springs and camber plates at the house but I cannot install them because I do not know how lol. anyone in the portland area want to help me this summer install all of that? I offer food, car talk, and a beer or two if your over 21.

cheers

Richard

Looks like it is getting there. I did the same thing with my engine once. I had an extingisher about 50' away so it was out in a few min. It melted some of the wires under the hood but that was it.

Dude I was freaking out! totally thought I lost my ride for good. But I did take the 7 to the beach over the long weekend. Ended up taking on my more cars then I had anticipated. Guess the sound made everyone think that their ride was better, lol but comet showed them! I actually had a saleen come up against me while I was in third gear just crusing. He did the rev thing and I could hear the supercharger spool. I knew I would have a chance in that situation but I thought it would be fun anyway so we get going and I was actually doing well for like ten seconds then out of no where you hear a loud buzzing sound from the other car and then a massive clunk followed by lots of smpke from under the hood of the guys car. His supercharger spun out on his and gernaded his motor!!! I do not know about you guys but a blown motor is a win in my book. Add to that a v6 mustang, mazda 3, subaru impreza (non-turbo), and a nissan 240sx se all beat down by my baby. lol I had a great weekend!!!

he didn't look happy thats for sure. but I guess thats the way things go when your dealing with aftermarket. you have to be sure when your dealing with this stuff, boost isn't something to mess with if you do not know what your doing.

I am glad someone can get something worth while out of this endeavor, it has been a experience to say the least. I have learned more then I had ever wanted to about my 7. In fact it has gotten to the point that I am debating on 30 ft/lb on the springs lol. If I can give ANY advice at all it would be this, get some books on your ride first. do a little searching, spend the 50~100 dollars on a couple of rx-7 books and read cover to cover, a couple of times. I wasted MANY dollars and MANY hours on stupid mistakes and redo's. If you have ANY questions about anything I have done or considered PM me or shoot me an email. Richardahoward@gmail.com

Time to put this thread to rest, for the last time. Here are the cliff notes in the last three years:

1. sold the 7 to a friend who promptly stripped it for all the parts and sold the body to some kid who was looking to race it. Body was found in junk yard trashed

2. motor went into friend's Porche 914 (which he promptly ran out of coolant and killed it)

3. all the good parts were individually sold off by said friend for booze and gambling money.

4. finished my degree (yay me)

5. got a GF, got married to GF (yay me)

6. bought MR2, hated it, sold it

7. got a job, got fired, got another job, they went under, got a better job, didn't like working there, got another job, loving it now

8. bought 2010 mazdaspeed 3 with 2 miles on it (got over 24k on it now https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR ). love it, but still miss my 79 rx-7. I will more than likely pick up the rotary mantel again some day but for now I will stare longly at rx-7's as they drive by https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png.
