Hi, I just recently aquired an 85 RX-7 GS. I knew it didn't pass smog when I got it, but I was confident I could get it to pass. Before I got it, it got:

15 MPH: HC(PPM)|"372" Requirement: 148

25 MPH: HC(PPM)|"314" Requirement: 123

What is suprising is the NO(PPM)

15 MPH: NO|"19"

25 MPH: NO|"19"

Average for cars that pass was 350-400

So the fuel is like coming out the back.

I changed the oil, plugs and oil filter, used high octane gas and octane booster. Tested it, and it dropped the HC's by a bit.

15 MPH: HC(PPM)|"226" Requirement: 148

25 MPH: HC(PPM)|"204" Requirement: 123

the NO's are about the same... and i made the CO% of the test pass with this so far.

I do not know what it can be at this point, a new cat... air pump... dist. cap/rotor or what not. I just love this car and would like some help, I really do not want to get rid of because of emissions.

Thanks,

Mike

I really cant help you but from experiance I have noticed that not too many of the guys on here pass emissions. Most of them get friends who have shops to do it or they buy illegal stickers. Other then that I would suggest a new cat.

you can try some of that guaranteed to pass stuff they sell at strauss. another trick you can try is pop off a vacuum hose which make the car run lean.........

Well what i am thinking is imcomplete combustion.... since the hightemp NO's are not where they should be as well. The max for that is 1191 and mine are at 19.... so maybe the coils, rotor, and dist. cap?

how is the air control valve? there are 4 parts to the emissions system, the air pump, acv, main cat and the tps. the acv is easy to check, there is a hose that goes into the right rear of the air cleaner, take it off and put your finger over it. if air comes out while the engine is under 2500rpms you need to make the air control valve work

let us know if you pass I have to pass IL emissions once I finish my car and register it, no emissions stuff on it.. I'm curious if that can of stuff works. I've heard a can or two of heet in a low tank of gas will help pass also.

If it doesn't pass you might need a new cat.Sometimes the old stockers just don't cut it anymore.Good luck.

well... the back cat looks brand new.. so it would have to be one of the precats, and if it is the front one... i might as well install the bonez cat and get rid of the 3.
