for some crazy reason i think my car is going to fall apart. when i start my car now, it sounds like the starter is running but not connected to anything. it just makes a whirring sound and doesnt turn over. so i play with the choke and leave the clutch like half out and i can get it started by the 4th try.

Did you try replacing the starter? Perhaps the bendex is broken and is not pushing the gear onto the flywheel??

I had the same problem with mine a while ago, it turned out to be the starter and was pretty easy to replace.

Now however I occasionally get a grinding noise when I try to start it up, but only happens on rare occasions.

This is funny to me, because I had the exact same problem on my old motorcycle. I'd have to hold the starter button, kick the solenoid, listen to it grind a couple times, and hope it started. I bet it looked hilarious from a spectator's point of view.
