I have some problems...
Hello,
I thought I just got most of the kinks out of my car and now I have more problems...My car was running bad...my plugs were a bit nasty...so I bought new plugs...she ran like a scalded dog...
I took her to school...no problems...I started her up after school...the choke kicked off...and she idled fine...
but...I put her into gear and give her some gas and she chugs along...even after I'm in gear...that happens every time I'm going under about 2500-3000 rpm
Once I get going it seems to be ok...barely noticible...
It's almost like my car is stalling...I played with her a little before I shut her off friday afternoon...did some tests and stuff
first I gave her some gas...a good 4000 rpm when not in gear...nothing goes wrong...the usual pleasant rumbles and stuff..idle is a perfect 800 rpm as usual...like I said before
However...when I took the cover off my carb and cupped my hands over the holes my car kept running...and I'm getting a strange hiss noise out of the carb while its running...I guess thats a vaccum leak right?
I just havn't seen anything like this on any of the other posts...everybody else seems to have idle problems or start problems
If anyone can give me ideas please do...I would like to drive my baby to school on monday
oh...we also tested the "cruise valve" or whatever that is...its one of the holes in the carb cover...we only get suction from it when I rev it up and quickly let off the gas...and its only temporary...so I think its normal

Hey Falcoln, wooffinn here.Man you don't have much luck with your Rx-7! Have you noticed any unusual and/or excessive smoke from the exhaust?
You beat me with the plugs. Usually the first check. Just have a quick look around the carb for any sus vacuum lines. Remember to actually bend them to check them for splits.
Couple of things I can think of. One it could be the fuel cut off soleniod. It's the little valve with an earth lead bolted to the carb and a single power cable. Just make sure the earth's tight and you have a good power supply. It's a bit hard to check but it basically is designed to cut the fuel on shut off. Just it quite regularly does it when it's running[and obviously shouldn't!]. It should click when you turn the ignition on. If you can remove it, put it's earth back on and check to see that needle shape rod moves when the ignition is turned on and off.[You'll probably need a friend but don't start it]. it usually moves about 4mm or 1/8" give or take.If it takes a while or anything looks sus it probably faulty.
Secondly and less complicated, how's your actual fuel supply?
Is the filter nice and clear? They can rev freely but bog down with load with a partial blockage there. Seen that problem plenty of times before.Just make sure your fuel pump looks ok too. Mazda also sneak a small gauze filter into the top of the carb inside the accelerator pump and float lines but we're starting to talk carby overhauls now!!

I don't have any exaust smoke except while she is warming up...it always cuts out when she gets warm. I do however have a massive ammount of smoke coming off the cat that bolts to the side of my engine...It is really noticible when you turn the car off...even boils out from under the hood usually...I have even had it come thru my vents while I was setting in traffic...I don't have a clue why it does that.
The only weird noises I have come from the carb...or engine I guess...the carb makes a sucking noise...even with the cover off of it...I covered up the whole carb with both of my hands and she just kept idling as usual.
As for fuel I have around 3/4 a tank I believe...only about 100 miles on this tank...so its probably a little less...but I do have fuel...And my fuel filter was replaced less than 5000 miles ago...it should be good...where is the fuel pump at exactly?
I'll check all the hoses tonight...and the little glass vials on the carb...
I'll tell you if I figure anything out...

My 1st gen had a coolant leak that caused that kind of smoke, does yours use coolant? Also it could be an oil leak, does it smell like oil smoke?
:notify:
My car doesn't really use coolant that much...I had coolant problems not too long ago tho...my radiator was clogged up...and it still isn't working right...but it does run cool
The system is supposed to take coolant from my overflow but it doesn't do it...it does from time to time...but I usually have to add to my radiator
As for the smoke it is white...burns my eyes on occasion...i seem to have a oil leak somewhere...not sure where...but I have fresh oil all over the bottom of my motor and oil pan...I haven't really lost a lot tho...I only put in a quart every month or 2 if it gets down one...not sure why it does that...beats me
All I know is it appears the stuff is dripping onto the cat and making a bunch of smoke...its been doing it for months
