Carb Woes
#22
I just talked to racing beat and they said there is no reason to change the jets. They set it up for the 13b stock port and made 195whp with full exhaust. He did say that you will get a slight hesitation or bogging when the secondaries open bc the jets spray the same amount of fuel all the time. that means they spray the same amount at first opening of the secondaries as they do at 7k. He said that if you do change them out you will be leaning out in your high end.
He did say you need to have the car timed to the specifications listed in the instructions, which may still be at my house or you can call them to get them. He also said that if youre not running an upgraded ignition like msd or something that its best to use the ignition from the 81-83s bc they allow you to adjust the leading and trailing timing and not just the leading.
The timing could be a lot of your problem. You need to be running advance which we did not do when we set it up. I do not have a timing gun so you will need to have that done by someone else.

i think the timing may have alot to do with it, any suggestion on who to go to with the timing gun?

timing shouldnt have changed at all....
you might want to hook the vacuum advances up though

the rb instructions say that you use the stock advance settings, but not the vacuum advance. if the vacuum advance is hooked up im guessing that it would run the same as if the timing was just set to the advance settings
ok matt called me last night after i told him that he needed to have it timed and said that he found out how to set the timing. i said thats great but youll still need to take it to someone with a timing gun to have it done. well to my surprise he says that he already adjusted it (with no light) and it was about 10 or 11 degrees that he adjusted it. basically he loosened the set screw and turned the dist but i dont know if he advanced or retarded, how he knows its 10 or 11 degrees i have no idea. he says that after he did that it was idling at about 2500 so he adjusted the throttle cable to get it to idle down. i cant figure out how he adjusted the cable to get it to idle down but thats what he says he did.
what do you guys think?

I think you 2 should get married with all the bitching.
J/K man, go buy a timing light and check the timing. Not a hard job to do and timing lights are fairly cheap, I got my Snap On light from a pawn shop.
RB is right about the jets too, you gotta remember the majority of people runnin aftermarket carb arent too worried about the "mids" as you put it. When those secondaries open its no gradual increase, I'd almost bet you bog or hesitate anything under 3500 if you get into it at all. Carbs are a bit different you cant just floor it and expect good results with a rotary.
On a side note what are you guys running for a fuel pump?
