Hello,

I've been driving my baby all over this weekend...then tonight i go to take off...put the key in and i notice this strange beep noise coming from down under the steering column...or around there...so i turn on my lights...start the car...and none of my guages are working....just...wonderful...

turns out the meter back fuse was blown...so i replace it...put the key in...and when i get to the on position it blows again...tried several sizes of fuse and it cooks all of them...so since its "meter back" if figured it must be something under the hood right?...well i havn't worked on it all weekend...actually i havn't worked on it since thrursday...so i don't know how an electrical problem can just...occur...

anyone have any ideas?...I need to drive home monday morning...and i'm not all that fond of driving without my guages

Thursday i rebuilt the master and slave clutch cylinders...and tuesday i ripped off the rats nest and the rest of the emissions on the engine...but it worked wonderfully till tonight...and there shouldn't be any bare wires under my hood...i don't think anyway...i didn't cut anything

have any idea what all hooks into the "meter back" so i might have some idea of where to start looking?

Going off memory here, seems to me the meter back is the guage cluster alone, all interior. So hm.....

what year is your car? Check behind the guage cluster perhaps. may be able to find smoethign back there...

It's a 1984 from around april or so...and i have had problems with the varous things on my steering column...dash...things like that...but it just doesn't seem like it should blow like that all of a sudden...i havn't done anything behind the dash recently...but i'll rip it apart in the morning and see what i can find...cuz i've had some strange problems ever since i got my new engine...the mechanic that did the work didn't hook a bunch of my stuff back up...like the cruise control...and the moron didn't even remember to clip my breather cover back on...so theres no telling what i'll find...and if i can't find anything i guess i'll just keep up with traffic :P

that sounds to me like its shorting out. Look for spliced wires. He could have spliced something in wrong, and its grounding out or looping too soon or where its not supposed to.

thats my best guess!!! good luck w/ that. need any more help, PM me please!

sounds like you need a new mechanic.

If your fuse is blowing, you've got a dead short somewhere. You might be better off starting with a wiring diagram, could save you some time.

I found the problem...it was the cruise control switch...the on/off push button on the dash...it quit working a long time ago...but I noticed it lighting up a few days ago...soon as i disconnected it...waaaaalah...no more blown fuses

so i'm guessing the switch fell apart inside or something...i dunno...either way it was causing a short...which might explain why my cruise hasn't worked since i got the new engine
