Backfiring
Hey Zeek, the best Rx-7's were made in '79 and went down hill from there![that should get some responses!]. My '79 has a 13B and like Rohlfr a faster than normal idle can cause it to backfire. Ususally any form of backfire is something firing your mixture besides your spark plugs. Most of the time it is a carbon build up so just check your plugs and just make sure the carb is in tune. Sometimes just a design of exhaust can cause it as mine has very large extractors on it and still occasionally 'flames on' when hot. It's a rotor thing!
If you've not removed the "reactive exahust manifold" from the car there's a little air bypass valve in there that causes all sorts of fun "BANGS" and what not when it goes amiss.
Also make your car smoke like mad from that area.
