and to add to pengaru's post you say heat up your rotors then give them a rapid cooling by going through a puddle.

if anything happens it'll most likely be a crack, or a hard spot, rarely does it "warp" due to rapid cooling.

and like pengaru said.. just cause everyone says it doesnt mean it's right.

like if everyone said the sky was pink with polka dots...does that mean its true?

Oh and not to throw MY weight around but 4 days a week im around about 10-15 ASE Master Techs of 10+ years (some as long as 20 years), and all agree rotors dont warp.

in fact some reccommend that if you inspect a rotor surface carefully and notice no marring or scratching that you dont NEED to turn it, sure you SHOULD turn it but it is by no means a requirement.

In fact lets throw some industry men into this conversation. For the past bunch of years GM has been releasing notices on how and when to turn the rotors on their trucks. First it was every 3rd brake job, then it was every brake job, then it was every other brake job, THEN they said no dont turn them at all you need new ones completely, and right now i think the're back to every brake job.

So not even the major players in the industry have the fact of turning rotors written in stone, so i dont see how you can.

Does turning the rotors actually remove rotor material? How many times can rotors be turned before they need to be replaced?

yes it removes material, but in rather small amounts, unless your rotors are FUBAR.

as for how many times, it depends, if you wanna be economical and only change when completely necessary get a set of micrometers and have your rotors turned. measure them and check the spec found somewhere on the rotor itself and if they're in spec use them. if you pay the place $18 to do it this is something they should be doing before and after they turn your rotors...you pay them so they damn well should do that much lol.

i like to change them more often then when absolutely necessary tho, just subtle reassurance that if im headed towards a truck i can stop in time .

Yeah, I don't think I'm going back there. I was already going there to get my bushings done, so that's why I brought my rotors there. I'll shop around when I do my fronts (which should be very soon).
