I have read up about Aerodyne turbos and understood some things, but not everything. Any information is welcome. What are the pros and cons and about how much do they cost?

pengaru:

I'm surprised nobody brought up the VATN turbos, if money is no object, you may want to check out this possibility.

I did reserch on VATN turbos and got weird content, from it it seemed that it is a brand of "aerochargers", like Aerodyne is, or so is my understanding....

I am lost. I guess this all started with pengarus post above and these sites as a resolt of my searchings:

http://www.aerocharger.com/tech1.htm

and this:

http://www.aerocharger.com/vatn1.htm

http://www.aerocharger.com/compressor.htm

http://www.aerocharger.com/bearings.htm

what do you guys think?

Variable Area Turbine Nozzles

• Improved steady-state and transient performance.

• Lower exhaust engine back-pressure—particularly at higher engine speeds—for improved performance and fuel economy.

• Advantageous for E.G.R. operation. P3 - P2 can be increased by closing the turbine vanes.

Air-cooled Ball Bearings

• Ultra low friction for rapid turbine acceleration and improved efficiency.

• Simplified system design and lower component costs. No water cooling system required for the bearing housing.

• Emissions friendly. Aerocharger’s air-cooled ball-bearings don’t require pressure lubrication. No oil pressure in the bearing cavity means less chance of particulate emissions from oil finding its way into the exhaust.

Self-contained Lubrication System

• No need for external lubrication lines. Simplified installations.

• No cross-contamination with engine oil.

• Practical for applications with limited, difficult to access, or even nonexistant oil sumps—e.g. motorcycles or two-cycle snowmobile engines.

Highly Versatile

• Virtually no restrictions on turbo orientation—even vertical installations are possible with an AEROCHARGER®.

• Self-contained lubrication system means that AEROCHARGER® location is not dependent an engine's oil sump type or location.

• The compressor housing is designed to accomodate different compressor inlet connections and oil storage capacities.

• Air flow and boost characteristics can be precisely tailored to specific applications and requirements.

Reliable

• Design life: 5000 hours.

• Tested on diesel and gasoline engines.

• Individual units field-tested to more than 105,000 miles (170,000 km).

• 1000 hour endurance tests.

• Designed and produced in the USA.
