35/40 Limitations
#41
Still working on the new motor. I'm almost done with the porting. Just have to finish the exhaust ports. The intake ports are enormous, even bigger than Vosko's. I started porting the intake manifold last night. Mainly I'm waiting on my guy to finish the turbo manifold.

someone give us a dyno of 40r!
demetrios had told me to take a ride in a t78 before making my decision, he also said t04s was nice. but i think im more impressed by the 3540.
where in ellicott city are you? im off centennial lane. maybe i've seen your car before.

I ran the 35/40 for over a year and got tired of it. Yea I put down 430 @ 16 psi and 470 @ 20psi but the timing was too advanced in my opinion. At the time the ports I had which were supposed to be huge, were garbage. After properly porting the motor and getting tuned by Steve, I never had a chance to dyno again. Something is messed up with the turbo. Steve thinks its the compressor map or something. It would make 15psi by 3500 rpm, but wouldn't pull hard till 6000. By 7500 power was falling off. Its good for the street, but I am looking for something more. All it took is a ride in a properly set up 60-1 car to convice me to sell the garrett.

Three times with the 35/40. Each time the turbo got trashed. After buying a rebuild cartridge the first time, I later learned that the exhaust wheel itself could be fixed. First time was a bad spot in my ignition map that had a -2 degree split. The second time was a bad tank of gas and while racing a moded viper. Third time I don't know... Funny thing is the car ran great for a few k miles on all three motors, then just suddenly let go. I found some interesting stuff each time I took it apart. Stuff like poorly wired fuel injector connectors and no resistors for the 2ndaries. I also found a broken injector wire the last time it went, but I think it was my fault because of the resistors I used that had solid wire. One more thing I learned from Judge Ito is the way you have to bevel the exhaust ports. I didn't know and didn't do this, so maybe thats why the last couple motors let go. Hopefully I'll get everything right this time.

was your car the yellow one?
he didnt do any tuning. it was tuned by pettit when i bought it. once i have enough money to get a single i will then get a pfc probably and have him tune it. i have to drop off the car sometime this week or next to get new injectors, i think they are leaking. would be nice if you give me a ride home so i can feel a t78. do you live near normandy or long gate.

Put it in neutral and stomp on the gas! See what your boost peaks at. It's no definitive test, but it can give you an idea.
