Why So Much Hate For The 8?

Oh, I have faith......But the FD has some big shoes to fill.
I believe that no RX is "better" or "best"....just all unique and different in their own way.

i like the way that black 8 put it. to all those people who thought the rx8 was a "replacement" for the FD there all wrong the "8" was just a way of keeping the rotary spririt alive. my dad just got an fd a month ago w/ a blown up motor so its kinda gonna be a father son kinda thing. the 8 is a cool car nonetheless and is just designed to do different things than the fd. and props to mazda for keeping the rotary spirit alive.

As an FD owner who does seriously dislike the 8, I feel like I should point out a few things.
The main reson I don't like it, is because everything about it is a compromise. Now, these days, a compromise is important, like was stated before, the FD was a huge financial gamble that didn't pay off in the American market, but to me the 8 is just too indecisive about what it wants to be. The FD was pure. It was totally a driving machine with little utility, no room, it was a GT car for the road. The 8 isn't sure if it's a sports car, a family sedan, or what. Some people call that the best of both worlds. But, I'm an all or nothing kind of guy, if I need a four seater, I buy a car that comfotably seats four or five full size adults, if I want a sports car, I buy a car that is an unadulterated true sports car. To me, the limited utility isn't enough to offset the so-so performance.
Secondly, I can't stand the looks of the 8. That's just a personal preference thing, but I think it looks like a commitee of Fast and Furious watching 15 year olds designed it. It's got flares and silly taillights and that goofy triangle on the hood and bumper and seats and shifter. I just think it looks silly, and the radio controls are not at all attractive to me and the whole two-tone thing doesn't work for it as far as I'm concerned. But, like I said, that's just me, different strokes for different folks. I'm coming from the viewpoint that the FD is one of the best looking cars of all time, and everything I like about the FD is sorely missing on the 8. I see the FD as clean, classy, understated, and timeless. The 8 is very trendy, styling wise, and already looks dated to me.
Finally, I don't like most 8 owners attitudes. One guy actually asked me if I got the FD because I couldn't afford the 8. He assumed that the only reason someone would buy a 12 year old car is because the new one costs to much, and he figured I was jealous of his car because it was worth more. I laughed. I asked what exactly I was supposed to be jealous of when my car is considerably faster for half the money. He was a bit of an idiot because he told me there was no way my "old" rotary was faster than his new hotness. So we put $50 on it. I went 11.5, he went 14.9, and he didn't say much after that. Unfortunately, most 8 owners I've run across have a similar mentality, their car is newer so it must be better. I can't stand people like that.
So that's why I don't like it. Obviously, those reasons apply to me, and I don't knock anyone for liking the 8. They just have different needs than I do. If you want a semi sporty car that can fit two adults and two kids and carry more than $40 in groceries, and if the looks work for you, then the 8 is a great car. Me, I have an '01 Audi S4 for when I need to drive people around, I have an '02 Lightning for moving beds or trees or towing the seven home after blowing the oil cooler (), and I have the seven for that unadulterated visceral seat of the pants driving experience. And the best part is, they're all faster than any 8 I've seen around Vegas.

After selling my 7 to get an 8 I was pissed after driving it. The power was **** all! but it handles so mouch better out of the box than the 7 that it kept me some what happy. Now in the grand scheme of things you can make anything fast. I really like the styling and the backseats. It has already got a **** load of parts for a car only being less than 2 years old. The market will be strong on aftermarket parts and you can rest assure there will be some 8's ready to rock some rx-7's soon enough.

the problem isn't the rx8, it's the rotary is only availible in one car. what if someone likes the engine, but not the car? i wish it was the old days again, with the rx2,3,4 in various bodies, etc like the wagon judge ito was born in
