tranny strength
it seems that mazda puts more strength in the cars that have higher HP. like the TII drive train is stronger than an NA easily. the FD drivetrain is equal to, if not stronger than the TII set-up. so being that the rx-8 has more than a TII and slightly less than an FD, it should be plenty strong?
depends on where you look. if you look on the rx8 forum, you'd think the trans is weak, everywhere else in the world it seems to do just fine.
the rx8 trans is the same design as the miata, but its got a different gear set, and the shafts are way bigger.

some pics of the guts, you can see the shafts are big, over an inch

Most of the guys on other rx-7 forums say the 8's transmission is the weakest part. I was doing some research thinking about swapping one into my FB but most people say it is a bad idea. I don't see why it couldn't handle something around 250 hp.
it can. the stock 6 port reni is 238 at the flywheel.
wich is more than anyhting besides the FD, i dont see why it wouldnt be just as, if not stornget that a TII or FD tranny. i have seen a few supercharged rx8s on the dyno pushing well over 300. they say they have had no problems with tranny of the rear.
