Yeah, I've had about 1/2 dozen people try the same scam on me. The autotrader seems to atract these loosers. At this point I can recognize the scam on the first e-mail because they all say the same thing. They mention a client and ask for a final asking price. For some reason they have all been yahoo e-mail accounts in my experience though I suppose that doesn't really matter.

When a freind an I were looking for a MKIV supra a few months ago we must have encountered this scam like 75% of the time. Strange thing was almost all were from Italy and they claimed that they were overseas soldiers or something.

i saw one of those MK4 supras. My girlfriend and i emailed the guy and he wanted us to western union him the money before he shipped the car. I'll only buy from locals.

Yeah, I considred doing the whole E-bay thing. Or buying a car and having shipped. But after reading so many horror stories lately I've basically decided against it. If I want a distant car that bad I'll personally go and look at it.

A friend of mine sold a car to another person in Ohio and there was a problem with the title. Whether it was an honest mistake or not, the state where he sold it from said it was a stolen car. He brought the car over state lines to deliver it. The new owner couldn't get it titled, sued my friend and got the police involved. Bottom line is he got nailed with transporting stolen property over state lines. Since the car was sold for over $1000, he got busted. Lost the lawsuit, owes almost $100,000 in fines and lawyer fees and is starting a 5 year sentence in the state prison on Wednesday. Be careful.

glad you didnt get ripped... sorry to say but this has been around for a long time... i came across it in craigsList long time ago.. didnt look twice cause it sounded so lame... and sure enough i got three emails the same thing same excuse as on the others ...

hal 02-09-2006 12:48 AM

i got myself into one of those scams just recently also. I have another car that i am selling and i put it on the craigs list and someone sent me 2550.00 and wanted me to mail them 2050.00 to nigeria africa. The money was in postal money orders and they were fakes. So be careful with what people send to u. Check it out very carefully before u cash anything. (hal) is the name on the RX-7 club NW forum.

These are the e-mails I've been getting from someone about my car...I'm worried it's a scam, too. :/

"Hello,

I wish to indicate interest in your vehicle for sale at $14000.Get back to me with available scanned pictures, information on the vehicle's service history and also the required payment time frame so that i could make arrangements for payment and pick up.

Regards,

George Stewart"

"Hello,

How are you? I just got your mail, I really appreciate your urgent response. My friend saw the ad on the internet and called my attention to it.Please give me a comprehensive detail about its present condition as well as its service history and as soon as this is done we will arrange for further proceedings.

Thanks

George Stewart"

"Hi Mike,

Thanks for your mail.My friend has reviewed the issue of sending a large check, with the waiting period required for it to clear and has decided to send you a down payment cashier's check of $8,000 being Part payment of the car cost. When you receive and cash it,you should let us know,so that the agent can proceed to your location to inspect the car. He will also test drive the car in your presence. On completion of this, the rest of the money ($6,000) will be paid to you in cash or direct wire transfer to your account before the agent picks up the car.I believe this is a better and simpler option. Please confirm the above scenario by sending your name, address and phone number for the down payment check,so that we can proceed with the transaction. As regards your note,i will call you at my convenience.

George Stewart"

"I received your mail and has conveyed its contents to Mr.Rupert, your payment is being processed and would be delivered next week via courier at your location address.I will get back to you with updates on the payment delivery.

George Stewart"

He basically says he'll send me a $8k deposit...wait for it to clear completely, then WHEN it does...he'll "send his agent" to see/feel the car... then if they like...I'll get the other $6k via wire transfer or w/e?

I gave him my name/mailing address/phone number...should I be worried?

o_O!!
