I thought it went RX5 to RX7 cos RX5 was such a dog that they needed to omit an entire series to give the RX7 some breathing space 
Was the RX7 project called P747 or was that the series IV ?

From the RX-2 onward Mazda had followed an obvious car naming strategy. There had never been an RX-6 though, apparently due to the problem of Japanese tongues pronouncing "x" and "6" in proximity, (they obviously got the hang of it by the time the MX-6 was born!) So the new car logically should have been the RX-8, but the RX-7 name was well known and as it had made such an impact the first time round it would be retained, project P747 became the second generation of the RX-7.
