Does this rotor look usable to you?

The damage in the photos are on the gear side of a rotor out of an '89 n/a block. I noticed it after removing all the carbon and side seals. It appears that one of the side seals was somehow twisted in place causing the rotor to spike out into the side seal a bit.

The scratches you see are realy blown out of proportion. They really are not as bad as the light makes them in these pictures. They are caused by a fine grade 3M scouring pad (the little round ones you use attached to a drill).

You really have to check your clearances.

It's hard to really tell by looking and why quess.

That what a micrometer is for (in this case a feeler gauge).

I realize that the rest of the rotor and this side seal groove in particular needs to meet the proper clearances but it could match on clearance on everything except this 2mm section of side seal (obviously it will not).

Is this 2mm section worth ditching the rotor for?

And it looks like I will have to take a file to it for the corner seals (the round one) to properly clear.

The more I think about it the more I think I should just trash it and start looking for another pair of rotors (the mate to this one ate an apex seal).

O.K. In my opinion the damage your showing in the photo is repairable.

(You'll simply have to find a small file or flat head screw driver to tap the bent tip out of the way and back into place), but before you do that you should first check all clearances on the rotor to make sure there isn't any other problems that would make the rotor unusable.

You have to ask yourself how was it that this seal had the room or "play" to come out of groove in the first place. It may just have been the seal itself was too worn or it could be your groove clearance on the rotor itself.

In any event you want to know this before you invest any more time/money into this rotor set.
