You need a dial indicator for checking surface wear as well. When you check for endplay in your motor, you need to set the motor up vertically with the counterweight side facing up. Then you put all the spacers etc on your eshaft place the base of the indicator on the block and the actual indicator somewhere on one of the spacers on the eshaft. Then you use a pry bar under the counterweight to lift and drop the whole eshaft assembly to find if your endplay is within tolerance.

If you haven't checked out this 13B Overhaul Video, do so.

at the very least pick up a mazda shop manual and read the engine disassembly/inspection/assembly section.

How do you check the wear on the side and end plates without a dial indicator?

Umm I know you can use a straight edge to check if the surface is true, but how do you use a straight edge to see if the wear grooves are within tolerances (were talking thousandths of an inch)

You REALLY need to spend the $30.00 for the Turrentine rebuild video and $22.00 for a dial Indicator and a Mag-Base.

Thank you, I thought for sure a dial indicator wasn't a piece of "optional" equipment when you were rebuilding.
