How do you check the wear on the side and end plates without a dial indicator?


Don't you use your fingernail? If it catches the wear is too much?

I figure once you get to the 500 rwhp range, expect to blow engine's the **** up. I don't expect to have an engine last longer than a year so I don't check the wear grooves. I normally just take 800 grip sand paper and give it a once over before putting the engine together.

When buying the tools for my rebuild I got my dial gauge from McMaster-Carr



McMaster.com

Browse to page 2067 and it is item 2316A11 at the very top.



I also got my feeler gauge and bottoming taps from McMasterCarr.



I got my micrometer set, caliper, inside mics and straight edge from ToolParadise.com.



I had to return a damaged tool to ToolParadise.com and had NO problems. And I got my order delivered from McMaster-Carr in just two days. Both places has given me excellent customer service.



I think I have over $500.00 in what I consider "rotary only" tools. But once I am done building all 3 motors I need they will have paid for themselves when you compare my total out of pocket expense vs. 3 rebuilds from any reputable engine builder. Plus it will give my great satisfaction knowing that I did everything myself.

So does the rebiuld video walk you through every step or does it leave out heres and theres(other words is the video worth it?). Still a little confused on the dial indicator. Never seen or heard of, much less knowing how to operate it . I blow too many motors(second one this year) to pay a engine biulder to biuld it. Almost went bankrupt the last one, seriously.

Where can find the little sharp object that you use to pull the seals out with? Sorry guys my engine biulder isnt very helpful on these kinda things(I wonder why )

If your gonna be doing this a lot, it's the best 30 bucks you'll ever spend. The video is very thorough (about 2.5 hours long) and he time lapses a lot of the stuff to shorten the video time.

If you are only doing this ONCE, I recommend the video. BUT it is not a substitute for the factory manual. Download it for www.fc3s.org or www.Iluvmyrx7.com

Yeah, I was assuming that he already had the factory manual as it's availabe for free, and that he was just looking for video examples.

right, I don't have the service book just the free internet one. So I guess the book is worth it. Im not sure about this motor, I was told that it wasn't for me being my first time to break it down sense the motor has had extra dowel pins. Why would it make things that much harder? Maybe Im mistaking what dowel pins are. Are the 1/2 inch pins that insert through the housings?

Buy the Atkins Rotary Video and Download the manual. For quick list so you can get an idea of how much this is going to cost you.



- 1" - 4" micrometers $70-$350+ Quality Counts! (.000)

- 1 1/2" - 3 1/2" telescoping gauges $30

- 2 1/8" flywheel socket $25

- straight edge $25

- dail indicator and magnetic base $45+

- 6" dial caliper $65+ (.000)

- feeler gauges $15

- 5 or 6 gallons mineral spirits $25

- Wash bin $15 (you can use a cheap rubbermaid bin but you can't leave the cleaner in it for more than a couple days it will crack and leak!)

- 24"+ breakerbar $25

-Cheater tube for more leaverage $5

- Steering wheel puller (to remove the flywheel) $15

- Bolts to hold the enging to the stand $10

- Engine Stand $45 (you dont need the attachment that a lot of people get for the rotary. Just take a 2x4 and cut it up and make a stand to place the engin on while it on the ground tranny end in the air. If you need a better description of this I can post a pic of mine.)

- Engine Hoist $250

- Clutch alignment tool $5

- Jack stands (4) $30



Thats just the start if you dont already have a well established tool set. I have over $20K in Snap-on tools and $12K Snap-on box to put them in and I still had to spend a bunch to get this project going. Now I'm broke from a divorce and cant finish it!!
