What were you pressing into the rotors?

Yep. There's a bearing in each rotors and in each gear. They present the wear surface for the eccentric shaft as it rotates inside on its bearing journals. Those bearings are the wear items that are replaced during rebuild time.

Thanks, Ito. I'm not sure if I beveled them to the proper angle or thickness or not but I did make a fairly consciencious attempt at it. I did move the seals across the port from opening to closing and it didn't crash into it or get bound up anywhere so I figure it's safe.

what's the pink stuff that you're using to prelube during the rebuild? does it work better than regular motor oil?

 

napa sells bearing grease, and so do many other places its called engine assembly lube.

 

Is it ok to use the stuff with molybdenum or whatever in it? Something tells me NO, but I thought I'd ask here. I had good success with oil and vaseline.

 

Are you pressing the rotor bearing with the rotor laying on the press. I use a big adapator on the underside of the rotor that fits inside the bearing.

 

I try to use the arbours where I can. That was the first day we had the press and were just getting it setup and getting used to it.

That specific kind is Redline Assembly Lube. I prefer assembly lube or vaseline over motor oil because motor oil tends to burn for much longer and also drips and creeps out everywhere making gasket sealant curing stuff a pain (front cover and oil pan stuff) whereas assembly lube remains intact. I also prefer assembly lube because it's designed specifically as a pre-lubrication for new engines and can also sit a measured time. I'm not sure how well vaseline holds up to this although I'd use it if I were in a pinch. I've been known to use baby-fresh scented Vaseline before. (makes for some trick-smelling exhaust for the first 20 mins or so)
