What do you guys think about slide throttles? I've heard they arn't very streetable, but I'm sure a progressive throttle linkage would help with that. I think I should have enough space between the throttle bores that I can have the linkages counterrotate and bring the plates in toward the center. I'm thinking some cool linear gear drives for the plates, delrin guides for the top of the plate and some kind of needle roller bearings for the bottom (loaded) side.

Think it would be worth the extra effort?

Since you have the ability to machine about anything you want you might want to think about copying what Hilborn has done with their rotary valve throttle bodies. Instead of a throttle blade they use a barrel valve. When it's fully open there is nothing impeding the choke opening just like a slide valve. I've tried to find good pics of it but can't. The Hilborn site only shows a wide view of the exterior. It would be easier to build since the loading on the valve could be carried by a ball bearing instead of worrying about how the slide valve's friction would be carried. With vacuum drawing on the slide valve or boost pressure pushing on it you'll need some sort of flat roller bearing system to handle the slide valve for smooth throttle action. Hilborn's system was designed primarily for sprint car applications so there has to be a good deal of throttle control built into the design.

I can't find their website, but that sounds like a damn good idea. I assume it would be like a piece of round stock with a hole the size of your runner bored through it? That sounds like it would actually be pretty easy to make, far simpler than the slide throttle... Definately going to look into it, thanks for the idea!

Hilborn has a site but they have no good pics of the throttle bore. Just exterior shots that don't show you much. Let me dig through my stuff from the PRI show and see if I brought anything home. But yeah, you have the idea.
