WHY???

Why do they bother grinding into the "tip" of the teardrop?

mostly to keep it cleaner. i couldn't imagine it does much for flow, but that part gets completely packed with carbon about 6-8mm down from the top. lots of funky edges where the sleeve meets the port wall. i was hoping a very smooth surface would help keep it clean. the exhaust ports actually shrink over time

you mean better photo quality or better port quality? i can't do much for my photography skills, but what do you suggest for the ports?

Ah, so Mazda evidently did NOT solve the exhaust port clogging problem that kept them from going side exhaust in the 70's.

Id like to see some better pics. That first pic looks rough, but if its not a finished port, then Im not worried.

Im glad to see people openign these engines up and messing with them. BTW, any chance you could post that dyno sheet? Id love to see it.

odd thing about these cars is they get richer with porting!!!!

here's a camparison pic of the exhaust port runner.

also, the "shrinking port theory"

I may be off topic here, so if I am, sorry.

So as far as n/a goes, the renesis makes way more power than previous n/a rotaries. But the side exhaust port was more for emissions, right? Where does the huge power gain come from? Could [the answer to my previous question] be applied to an n/a engine with a peripheral exhaust port for an even larger gain?

Or does the side exhaust port actually help to increase power?

i think they wanted it to increase power...there's almost twice the area. but the path is so inefficient, that i look at it as a hindurance.

as soon as i'm done testing the larger exhaust porting, i'll post up results, but that's gonna be a turbo car, so i don't know how much good it would do. but the side exhaust ports is what brought the rotary back to the US. it's a give and take situation. without them, the car wouldn't burn clean enough to meet current emission standards.

this ported motor still has zero overlap, btw.

I think the increased power comes from a better intake system as well as the higher compression.

Just my 2 cents...
