IRS in 1st gen
#1
so i been tossing around this idea of fabbing the FC diff, axles, spindles, and hubs into my 1st gen. i have the diff and axles just sitting there from a 91 ready to use. and i could easily get the 4 lug hubsand sindles from the junk yard for cheap. i have the basic structure sketched out on paper. but i would like ideas about coil over location.
basically to mount on the lower a-arm or to use the stock mounting location on the spindle is what im not sure of. i dont know if anyone has done this to a 1st gen yet. i did see a full write up of a guy who put the miata subframe in. but i will be mounting it most with 1x1 16 gauge square tubing. and varoius other material where needed.
if this has been done before. lets see some pics to see how my idea compares. im sure theres plenty of people who would like to IRS feel in the 1st gen.
anyone with some info on this can chime in too...

if you really look at the floor pan of both cars the 1st gen is going to need a lot of work to the floor to fit the FC suspension.
the miata suspension fits the 1st gen floor pan much better, and its a better suspension design too. the FC is designed to have a low trunk floor, miata handles

i am kind of all over the place. but i do have the cars that i mention. and i post up the things i would like to do to see the pros anmd cons of each thing. i still plan on doing a solid rear in my TII. but i found a TII trans, diff, axles, and driveshaft for 300. so i had to do that. and if the TII set up ever becomes to weak. i'll do it. probley not for a while though.
and i would completely cut out the rear floors of the 1st gen to make it IRS. kinda like if i was going to tub it, but keep the wheel wells. but modified a bit. then build the cradle from there. recover with sheet metal. and eventually rug it for a "stock" look. the pictures i seen of the miata sub frame in the 1st gen did pretty much what i said, slightly different.
seems like a lot of work. but im more into fabbing these days than bolting on parts. im currently in welding/fabricating school, and the better i get. the more i want to make. plus, the major cost of this project meterial. much cheaper than exspensive aftermarket parts.
