Hi! This is my first post on this forum. I have looked around for a couple of days and it seems to be great! A whole other level compared to rx7club.com, which im used to... Anyway, here is my question:



When i disassembled my engine i saw that the inner water seal groove had some kind of sealant in it. It was not hard to remove but harder than the o-ring. And it was really stiff but dident brake like the o-ring when i pulled it off. Is this common? What is it, Hylomar? I read somewhere one the forum that i should only use grease (brand: molycote) in both the inner and outer groove, but is this correct? My engine has never been open before so this sealant is from the Mazda factory. The car is a -94. This is (obviously) the first rotary im putting together but i think i can pull it off. I just need to know this before i put everything back together.



I would be happy if you guys could clear things up a little

I have not seen one yet but I have seen comments on this here somewhere. Thr grey stuff is a sealant similar to a silicone used by Mazda on assembly. Probably available at the parts counter of your Mazda dealer, or, from Mazda Trix or Racing Beat. I use 100% GE silicone tub and tile caulk from Lowes. I have used Hylomar. Vasoline. Nothing at all. and various brands of silicone from a squeeze tube at the race track. Whatever was available sort of situation.



The object of the goop in the groove is to keep the "O" ring from falling off just as you pop the iron or rotor housing back onto the stack, and getting it pinched and ruined on assembly. Since most people assemble the stack in the vertical (with the crank pointed down). This could apply to only those pieces where the seal will fall off. Where the groove is facing up, you can use nothing if you like. The silicone also allows for the use of damaged or corroded pieces that would leak without the silicone. More like getting away with something rather than good shop practice. Other types of sealants might work as well for this, but I have not tried everything yet. If you use silicone, turn the engine backwards a few revolutions

(remember the grooves for the side seals if you ported the crap out of it) and vacuum out the excess silicone (or whatever you used)out through the exhaust port.

its part number 8527-77-739 honda and toyota have similar stuff too. ford/motorcraft actually carries it too
