Okay I got the front cover off.

I will get pictures soon enough, but the main gasket wasn't too straight, I got alot of oil leaking around the front cover (you can see in my gallery in my sig), and the o-ring had a small cut in it?

Also the O ring was just a plain black rubber o-ring, no white teflon outer ring. That's proper for the S4, right?

I have had a problem with lower oil pressure, or possibly the thermo bypass valve in the e-shaft. I had always assumed it was the sending unit or the gauge itself since they aren't known for their accuracy. I can't remember but I think my pressure was spiking about 35 psi or something? At idle it would slowly drop to just above 0 psi.

How can I check to see if the thermo bypass valve that came out was functioning properly?

Here is a picture from before I had the cover off. Look at all the oil all around the cover mating area.

TOTALLY attributed to improper gasket installation. I'm starting to think the cover was taken off before I got to it?

its sometimes normal to see that much oil on teh older engines that have never been appart. a tiny oil leak will add up to that much oil on the engine.if the oring was ripped that could very well be the problem of low oil pressure and not the thermo valve, order the solid thermo pellet from atkins or such, this will take care of the stock piece that can sometimes fail. the only downside is that the oil goes to the rotors before teh engien is warm, and i dotn think it really takes a noticeble amoutn longer to arm up the engine this way anyway.
