Thumbs up

Okay. I've searched. I've read my Haynes manual 3 times. I've read about a half a dozen threads helping me decide what I want. I've watched most of the online Rebuild videos. I've even ordered the Atkins Rebuild DVD.

I need a straight answer on a rebuild kit though. For all my searching, I can't hammer down exactly what kit I need. There's "Rotor Kits", "Master Kits", "Overhaul Kits", "Gasket Kits", and more. These terms are from Atkins. If you know of another kit maker, please chime in. Give me some options.

I'm picking up an 85 GSL-SE 13B motor complete this weekend that needs a rebuild. I want to rebuild and possibly streetport it. I intend to install this (eventually) in an 85 GS. I'll be choosing a carb later when the time comes.

Can someone breakdown the kits a little for me? I'm not sure if I can tell the difference between one kit or the other besides a huge price jump. I'd like to thin I"m fairly good at finding information when I need to. I've been a lurking on this board since early 05, but I've never had to post because I've searched. I just can't find a clear discussion on rebuild kits and gasket sets.

I apologize if this should go in the First-Gen section, this just seemed to be about engine rebuilding to me.

The Atkins Master kit includes all seals and gaskets you need to do a pro rebuild.

Rotor kit is usually just the seals and gaskets thats on the rotor

Overhaul kit is all the o-rings

Gasket kit is just that

But ofcourse it all depends on where you buy it.

The Master kit has it all, remember to get the irons resurfaced so that the new seals will seal better.
