I've always used stuff we called "honey", which is basically that "no smoke" oil you put in your crankcase to (theoretically) stop if from smoking. It's super think oil and it sticks to everything. I would use the petroleum jelly on anything rubber though.

I use the motor honey too. Its sticky as all hell, but not as solid as vaseline.

I use three things:
- Lucas Engine Oil Stabilizer (trick I learned from the machinist/assembler guy at Majestic Turbo in) on the crankshaft bearings, crankshaft itself, and the stationary gears' teeth. Also on the front cover assembly pieces (thrust place, thrust warrrsher, thrust bearings and spacer, etc.)
- Petroleum jelly on the faces of the iron plates -- I use baby fresh scented as a joke for when the car first starts up the exhaust smells like talcum powder
- Actual 'assembly lube' product for the innards of the oil pump so it can draw a vacuum during first cranking and not run the risk of the engine running dry

You know, you could try the Lavendar and Chamomile scented one too. May give that a try next go-around.

Wow I'm glad I asked.. 
I'm definetly going to use Petroleum jelly on the faces of the iron plates.
I think using Lucas Engine Oil Stabilizer on the thrust place, thrust washer, thrust bearings and spacer, etc Is a great idea!! I like Lucus anyways.
I ordered some Hylomar from racingbeat along with my rebuild kit and some other goodies..
Thanks for the info, and advise on what you guys use!

I used the Lavendar this time!
I have to admit, I actually liked it better than the baby-fresh.

The Lucas stuff is real tacky and stays that way seemingly forever... that and it's designed for the oil system, so what the heck right
