I'm putting an S4 NA motor in my S3. I changed the front cover without marking any of the relations of the e-shaft pulley, or pulley boss...

Now it's time to reassemble, and drop in the CAS (did I mention I am using all of the S4 engine control stuff?). before i can do that I need to get that front pulley on...So here's what I did, and the logic I used:

1: Using flashlight, rotated the engine until I could see the apex seal on the front rotor through the leading spark plug hole.

2. Kept rotating until I could see the bathtub.

3. Put pulley on such that leading notch on pulley was very close to timing pin on front cover.

4. In order to double check, I rotated the engine until I could see an apex seal in the rear leading plug hole. leading timing mark had passed the timing pin, but was in the general area.

So the logic was that since the front pullley can only go on 4 ways, it was o.k. to stick the front pulley on with the notch in the vicinity of the timing pin while the engine was in the vicinity of TDC.

Sound good, or am I way off?

your good for finding TDC. just make sure you properly align the crank angle sensor. i usally mark the inner teeth to the leading pick up coil.

The S4 and up pulleys are drilled with an offset pattern. If you're using that hub and pulley it will only go on one way. So there is no need tow worry about if you have it on right or where TDC is. Also, if you try to drop to the CAS in at TDC it will be off. The pulley needs to be lined up on the leading mark when you drop the CAS in...not TDC.

Awesome possum, thanks guys. I did drop the CAS in with the timing pin lined up with the leading notch. I even opened the CAS and made sure that the shaft didn't turn as I dropped in the gear. So knock on wood, it should be alright.

I didn't know about the s4 pulley. I actually re-used my s3 one because it was in better shape. If time allows, i am going to notch it per yaw's instructions.

So, the engine is assembled, Mrs. Feds is going to drop it in the car, while I rewire the ecu and re-make the body harness. God bless wiring harnesses
