I read some posts by Judge Ito referring to the necessary clearancing when using atkins apex seals, and tried to PM him about it, but he hasnt got back to me yet. Any help would be great.

I would guess that it pretty much comes down to making the length of the seal match the length of the rotor minus the standard clearance given in the FSM or Haynes manual.

it's not that simple, the reason ito explained it is because the material differs from the stock seals, and consequently thermal expansion and wear characteristics differ, so the clearancing is different.

True, I have heard of Atkins 3mm seals expanding more than OEM type seals under engine heat and seizing up. So there is added clearance necessary for 2mm Atkins seals due to the thermal expansion differences? I thought that only their 3mm ones had that property . . . although Judge Ito puts together many engines with 2mm Atkins seals so I would be interested in knowing what he knows.

Well its tomorrow, actually two days from then. Finally looked

I really don't have any specific info on Atkins seals, but I do have Judge Itos clearancing specs. Why don't you call the Judge himself...

I'm sure he would run over whats needed for atkins seals with you real quickly if he has the time. Very nice guy, for a judge and all.
