suggestions on best suspension setup for road racing an s4?
whats my best bet in your guys opinion for the best suspension setup for an s4? spend alot of time doing road race in my supercharged 91 miata, but am currently working on an fc... looking for an opinion, new to fc's
Well, it would depend on what type of setup you have in mind.
You always have the springs with a good set of adjustable shocks to allow for soft or hard to allow for different settings on and off the track.
Then you have the fully adjustable coilovers in which there are many choices to go with such as Tein, KSport, HKS ... etc. There are many choices out there with different springs rates to allow for a tighter suspension.
We personally run the KSports on our 87 TII but alot of members seem to run the teins. Also keep in mind is the car always on the track or will it do some street driving. To stiff of spring rates can kill on the street.

The common ITS package will do you nicely for a weekend track car. No need to spend lots of cash on adjustables IMO. Though there are reasons to alter setup for different tracks but a good middle of the road setup will be good enough to enjoy at all tracks. We won Cen-Div East this past year. Lots of wins, lots of poles, qualified under or within a couple tenths of the lap record at all but one track...and that weekend it was less than 40* ambient.
Our package is basically the Bilstein package offered by Mazdaspeed and ISC. Go with the Mazdaspeed stuff if you can. The ISC front mounts are junk compared to the AWR stuff you get from Mazdaspeed. We've ran Konis and the Bilsteins are a world better. We run a 350 front and 275 rear spring. No rear bar. 1.125" front bar. Alignment is 1/8" toe-out front with 0 toe in the rear. Ride height is around 5" at the rocker but we play with that quite a bit for balance. Rear ride height is critical as the suspension will bottom to the tub before the tub hits the ground. Don't go too low. Setup this way the car is very positive. I would recommend a 250 rear spring and maybe 1/16 - 1/8" toe-in at the rear to tighten the car up for an open track day car.
All that said we ran the same shock at 4 different tracks and only once qualified worse than 2nd. We changed rear springs once to tighten the car up at Grattan. Everywhere else gets the same setup. Don't spend time chasing a setup. Find something that works and then work ont he driver. That's where all the time is to be made up at this level.
