I ran the Peterson dry sump pump at Mid Ohio for the last time this past weekend.

The third pressure section cracked and sprayed oil onto the headers. There was a small fire involved, but no injuries.

This is the third and last failure of this type, as there will be no Petersons in my future until I can have a steel or larger aluminum pressure section custom machined. Is it not a shame that I cannot pay $1,400.00 for a new pump and run 100 PSI for even 8 weekends without a pump failure.

This last pump was overhauled by Peterson so as to eliminate any possibility that I was making an error in assembly.

I am told that the early round Peterson was a very good pump. The failures are in the current production rectangular pump.

As it turned out, we lost an easy third place.

what is causing these failures? vibration? flaws in casting? improper mounting?

The pump body is just too thin in the pressure section. The top corners just crack through from fatigue. The round Peterson had no such problems that I have heard of.

That is the good Peterson. On a nice looking mount also.
