I ran the Peterson dry sump pump at Mid Ohio for the last time this past weekend.
The third pressure section cracked and sprayed oil onto the headers. There was a small fire involved, but no injuries. This is the third and last failure of this type, as there will be no Petersons in my future until I can have a steel or larger aluminum pressure section custom machined. Is it not a shame that I cannot pay $1,400.00 for a new pump and run 100 PSI for even 8 weekends without a pump failure. This last pump was overhauled by Peterson so as to eliminate any possibility that I was making an error in assembly. I am told that the early round Peterson was a very good pump. The failures are in the current production rectangular pump. As it turned out, we lost an easy third place. Lynn E. Hanover |
what is causing these failures? vibration? flaws in casting? improper mounting? |
The pump body is just too thin in the pressure section. The top corners just crack through from fatigue. The round Peterson had no such problems that I have heard of. Lynn E. Hanover |
