I decided this weekend to start moving towards my competitors liscense. I thought I would chronicle it here so anyone else considering it can see what is involved.



I looked at some different options and it came down to two scenerios.



1. Rent a IT7 car and attend 2 SCCA driving schools. The SCCA schools cost about $100-$200 per day you must do 2 days. The car rental was the killer it can run from $500 to $1200 per day. I have talked to people that have taken the school and the instruction is minimal. More time is spent on flags and safety / which is important / then on driver skills. But, for $100 you get what you paid for. If you already have a race prepped car this is the school for you.



2. Register for a SCCA sanctioned driving school. I picked Justin Bell driving school because it is local to me. It is a 3 day school with lots of classroom sessions and tons of track time. By the end of the school you participate in a mini race. I an confirming this but I believe you end up with your own driving suit after the school. They give it to you to use and you keep it. Cost for this school is $2,700 pricey yes but after 3 days I have my liscense.





First step is to get my application in with the SCCA for a novice liscense and get a physical. Then its off to school.

I printed out the applications and I hope to mail them out this week. The next Justin Bell school I can attend is in December. So I am going to try to get all my paperwork in order before then.

Sounds like a plan. I believe I would go the school route as well. Not only will you get your license, you will improve your driving as well.



Side note: Spec Miatas are amazingly loud for their size. They were the loudest series out of all the Speed cars and open wheel F2000 cars by far at last years Speedfest.

 

I agree they will teach me even more about car control. Safety is important but car control and driving ability are just as important in my book.

I looked into Skip Barber's school at Summit Point. While any car would fun to drive, I was kind of looking forward to running around in a Viper. To get your license there you have to do the three day school in the open wheel Formula Dodges. Still a consideration.

2 Live Crew!! You have no idea how much I listened to them back in the day. They were the originators of booty songs. They still throw their stuff in on the weekend mixes. They will never go out of style they were ahead of their time as far as how raunchy they were.

Skip Barber,... be warned,.... I have it on a very good source that the big names get the "better" cars. If you are not a big name you WILL be in a slower less sorted car. It sucks that the suck *** politics of racing reaches all the way to driving schools.

Out of curiousity, even if you did get the slower cars, would it really matter? You're there to earn your license and learn a few things, not to win a race. Am I correct? Other than that, yes, it sucks that the "big names" get the good cars, but who would the "big names" even be at such a low level? Celebrities?

anyone that regularley races will tell you that. but to broadcast identicle cars, and then give certain drivers an advantage is shitty, not to mention false advertising, and very misleading. I met a guy on team fc3s that's dad participated in skip barber, and was an excellent driver, but could not get within 9th-10th place, then his car broke down.



When he came into the pits, they tossed him into the next car in line, he takes it out and immedialty is keeping up with the front runners.



You spend your money on what you want to, but I think I go to a place where the focus is driving/learning, not money polotics. I can watch CNN anyday.
