I am trying to get some actual help here.
Do you have some specific questions, or do you just want total strangers to tell you what you want? Expecting others to sit here and tell you every little detail of every turbo combination is pretty selfish, especially when that info is already in this forum or the other one somewhere.

Most people have experience with the stock turbos and ONE other combination, because we can't all afford to swap on turbo after turbo to satisfy the curiousity of others. Asking on an internet forum will get you a lot of differing answers.

A lot of those people who will answer may have actually seen the turbo they claim to know all about, some may have even been in a car that was running the turbo they are telling you about. Fewer still actually OWN a car with the turbo they are talking about.

The point is, do you want to listen to someone who may have got their info from asking this exact question on the internet 3 weeks ago, or do you want to get answers from someone who has actually experienced what they are talking about?

If you want as much information as possible, all at once, go to (don't call) a shop that has dealt with a lot of different combinations. If they think you are serious and not there to waste their time, you should be able to learn a lot. Be prepared, these shops have kids (ricers) coming in everyday asking about turbos. 99% of these kids have $200 to their name, but want to tie up a busy shop owner for an hour at a time. The first question they will ask you is what do YOU want the car to do. If you say it's to be faster than your friends neon covered Civic, you may not get a warm welcome. But if you are ready with a small list of intelligent questions, and for God's sake bring your RX-7 if you can, they can be very helpful.

This may sound like I'm flaming you, but I'm not. Had this been posted in the other forum, the first, second and third replies would have said 'SEARCH' in big letters. Be prepared to do some of this yourself.

If you want to know about BNR upgraded twins, PM 'SPOautos' on the other forum. If you want to know about M2 upgraded twins, PM 'artguy' on the other forum. They have both been very informative about the turbos they have, and will likely reply with more info than you can shake a stick at. For single turbo info, go down the single turbo lists on this forum. PM individuals about the combination they have. 'Vosko' would be a good source on the T-78, 'Silver Ninety Three' has a GT35/40 that he can tell you about, etc...

Happy Hunting!

So what else made you decide to go single....

shawn
the T78 is trust turbo made by mitsubishi. it is for drag racing although the lag is not bad at all. it sounds to me like you would LOVE a GT35/40 it spools sooo fast. i drove ihor's and its very fun to drive

for daily use the GT35/40 is a better choice...... for drag racing the T78 is very good

Do you have some specific questions...[/quote]

What is wrong with peole giving there insight? I dont understand how I am being selfish. I did mention this was for ALL people to learn the differences between these setups.

I do know there is info on the other forum. Do you not think I have been reading it? How easy is it do you think for me to follow, if you dont know what everyone is talking about?? It gets confusing real fast when peeps that know what they are talking about start rambeling on.

Getting a lot of different answers....is that not a good thing??

Now about going to different shops. For the last many years i have had a T11. Now I am the owner of a FD.

#1 it is winter hear, we just had a storm. My FD is not going any where.

#2 there are not many shops around here that do performance work on rotarys mainly. Most of the shops just sell car air fresheners and Reactive mufflers!!

#3 why would i go and waist anyone's time when i know very little about the different upgrades as it is? I dont see what is wrong with learning the basics on the internet so I can cary on a decent convo and not look like a punk with $200 in his hand

#4 how can I come up with intelligent questions if your telling me to read past convos that I cant understand? Im still looking like that $200 punk.

Basically by doing this I am giving people a way to learn. not just to try and folow along on other peeps post and get confused only minutes later!!!

Is this so wrong??

Thanx Vosko......

Now what is the difference between the T78 and the GT35/40?

Why is it that it has two numbers? I assume it spooles faster because it has a smaller turbine.

I think the two numbers 35/40 are to identify the two types of turbines you can choose from.. The T78 is bigger compared to the GT35/40.. therefore the spool up rate is slower on the T78.. so you get the power you want quicker. Of course the T78 has a capability of producing a little more power so, when it kicks in it should be pretty good.

GT 35/40 means a GT35 compressor with a GT40 turbine.... every company has their own sizing standard you can compare apples to oranges you know. my T78 has a TD-07 compressor and TD-08 turbine *so i hear*

the GT35/40 is a dual ball bearing and slight smaller so it will spool faster.

Mazdabation,

Like I said, I did not intend to insult you. But in your first post, you stated you have been reading everyday about other people's turbo discussions. Yet you have asked who makes the T78, one of the most popular and talked about turbos available for the RX-7. This would take 20 seconds to find out. As you can see, Leetheslacker has done his homework, he knows that a T78 is the combinatiion os a TD07 and TD08. Not a lot of people know this, even people with a T78. Lee is 14 years old. He found this out by doing research.

Getting a lot of answers is not necessarily a good thing. For example:

The numbers 35/40 have nothing to do with identifying the two types of turbine you can choose from... the 35 means you are using a GT35 turbine and CHRA from Garrett attached to a GT40 compressor from Garrett. Just because a turbo is physically bigger does not mean the spool up rate is automatically slower and it can produce more power. The GT35/40 does spool up faster, but no one on these forums has really taken identical cars using the GT35/40 and T78 and run them on a dyno on the same day, using identical boost settings to find out which one produces more power. For one thing, both of these turbos will produce about the same power on street gas. A lot of turbos produce the same power on street gas. To find a difference between the peak power output, you would have to take these two cars and fill them with race gas and turn up the boost to 20 - 25 psi before you MIGHT find a difference.

As you can see, I have completely contradicted almost everything rx7machine has said. Whom should you believe? Don't assume because I have written more and didn't use the term "I think" like he did that I am right and he is wrong.

The T78 and Gt35/40 have been directly compared many times in long winded threads in the last 6 months. Vosko here is one of only a few people who can actually say they have experienced both, yet many, MANY people have offered 'insight' without laying eyes on a car with either.

Here are some questions you need to be able to answer to start to choose between your poll contenders (I chose single turbo, by the way)

1. Why are you looking to replace your turbos? Are they badly damaged? Not enough power? Why?

2. What is your budget?

3. What mods have you already done?

4. Do you want to look stock under the hood? Fool the E-test guy?

5. How ill mannered a car can you handle? Lag, noise, fuel economy, etc... Your intended use will reflect on this answer.

6. HOW MUCH HORSEPOWER DO YOU GOTTA HAVE??

You'll find there are other questions to answer, but if you answer all of these honestly to yourself, your choices will narrow down pretty fast.

I know the discussions about turbos are very confusing. As a new guy you should stick to discussing turbos that are readily available in kits, like from HKS, Greddy, XS Engineering and others that shops have put together. They have done the hard work of choosing all the turbo specs, which is a difficult and expensive process. I think a lot of your confusion would stem from the fact that people start talking about A/R, wheel trims, inducer, exducer and all the little bits that make up a turbo. Ignore that stuff for now.

Be patient, and don't look for others to give you all the answers right away, because you don't have any way of knowing what is good info and what isn't yet.

Don't worry, there are a couple shops around you that can help you, but you are right to wait a little before you go in. An intelligent question can be as simple as, 'What turbos have YOU installed in the past?' 'What do YOU reccomend based on your experience and my answers to these 6 questions?' You'll get a pretty clear opinion just with those 2 questions. If you don't you are at the wrong place. Keep in mind they may have to tell you that you have unrealistic goals, (600 HP on $2000 ain't gonna happen), but they can help you settle on something that will work for you.

Ask specific questions. Large books have been written about turbocharging, and asking very general and broad questions would require someone to re-type one here for you.

Anyway, answer my 6 questions and let us give you a hand.

Uhh, Vosko, I think you have both of those backwards. I KNOW the GT35/40 is a GT35 turbine and GT40 compressor, and I'm pretty sure the T78 is a TD07 turbine and TD08 compressor.

i have driven both a T78 and GT35/40 car. i already gave my opinion GT35/40 is better for a street car. T78 is better for max power like a drag car

i'm waiting to see when works2r will let me drive his T04R FD
