What Would You Do?
#31
I was at a driving school.
There was a guest instructor there that was a multi national champ in a stock class. No names mentioned.
Another National Champ (that is retired) jumped in stock class's car and after 2 runs had crushed his best time on that course. This stock class champ spent the rest of the day trying to catch that time. He never did. So stock class champ decided to call a drivers meeting and yell at all the students for taking the wrong line and pushing pebbles into the correct line which in turn was causing him to drive bad. This really happened I am not BSing you.
I have seen some really good drivers but I have seen some poor drivers that did not impress me. I was at a loss how they managed to win a national event.
I have come to this conclusion. There ARE some good drivers at the National events. I think there are a lot of REALLY GOOD drivers at local events which we never see at a national level due to either lack of funds or lack of time or both.
I have only been at this for 1 year. I seem to have a knack for it BUT I have the sense to realize that the car is only as fast as the driver. I have spent as much time tweeking the driver as I have the car. This means going to all practice days taking driving schools reading technique books as much as possible. Playing GT3 to keep my reflexes fast. I know that sounds funny but I do. I also go to the gym and work out based on what I need to handle the car better.
The funny thing is I used to really want to go to the Nationals but now I really dont care. I am kind of burned out on the whole thing. The only reason I go now is for my son to race his 100cc Kart. I am now looking for other places for him to race it and I am looking into open track days. I might go to the Nationals next year (2004) just for kicks but I really dont take this too seriously anymore. Its fun to drive the car hard and I really have nothing to prove to anyone.
