Firstly: By "Normal" Golf, I assume you mean 2.0l=115hp, 115 tq. Golf TDI=100hp, 177 tq.

Secondly: GTI 1.8T=189hp (not 179), 177 tq. GTI VR6=201hp, 190ish tq.

Thirdly: It is possible and very easy to get power out of any 1.8T motor (I have 2 cars that are 1.8T). Just chip it, and there's an extra 35hp minimum (depends on the chip). They are good, reliable, fun cars to drive. Some of the best cars I've owned. My GTI is faster than my TII was when it was stock. My Jetta is just as fast. Don't doubt the VW's abilities. Both of mine have factory 17" wheels with the "Sport Suspension" (1" lower than normal, stiffer springs) and they handle very nicely. The only feature I dislike about both is the inclusion of traction control.

for VW!

THe people who say that VW's are unreliable are the people who don't own one, or who compare everything to a Honda Civic. There is no way someone can say that RX-7's are reliable, either, so that point is moot.

A very good friend has a 2.0L dropped into a Golf and turboed. It's sick as hell....though I don't think he's ever had it on a dyno. It is most definitely possible to make a Golf FAST. I will say though, that things will break. His is forever in the shop.

chips are usually in the neighborhood of $300. It will b every hard to have a daily driven 400fwhp Golf of any sort, barring radical motor swaps. Also it's pretty much unusable power on the street, so why bother? Make a 250hp GTI and make it handle...that's all you need
