I've heard that the 944 is very reliable, and that the 928 is very expensive to keep on the road, so I suspect that it varies quite a bit from model to model. Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything about the 996.



I would say go for it, but I've always loved Porsche's so I'm a bit biased.

Find a Porsche forum with a good tech section - I'm sure there's a post about common problems with the car(s) you are looking. This will at least give you an idea about what you are getting into. Porsche owners are generally enthusiasts and most I've met are pretty honest about the issues/expenses for their cars.

 

Ive heard they have problems with the main crank bearings leaking a lot of oil... this is just hearsay tho, so check on a porsche forum

 

um yeah thats about right. the engines usually are good its everything attached to it, and the newer the car the more recycled poop is used to make it, and the shittier it is.



a buddy of mine works at a european car shop and its not uncommon for german cars to need $2500-6500 worth of stuff every 60k.

 

I have a close friend that owns a shop as well, I can confirm that statement.

I would never own one unless it was still under warranty.

 

On a serious note, ive been looking at an older 993 as the FC replacement. I think if I didnt put a great deal of miles on it, it would be fine. But all the research I did is exactly whats already be said: open your wallet at every major service interval.



I think if you have that expectation in mind, getting a 01 or 02 used 996 would be a great car to own....

 

yeah, if its a weekend car, then you avoid most of the biggies. look at my fd, its got 110k on the original motor now! it just doesnt fly!

 

The non-turbo models aren't worth a ****. I'd never buy one. I've driven many, and there are much better cars in the price range you are looking at.

 

Actually, I have to disagree totally. Saying the non-turbo models "aren't worth a ****" is a pretty broad statement. If you drove a boxster, id agree with you, but I have driven an 86 911SC and 996 Carrera and loved both. If you are make judgement soley based on HP, top speed, etc, im sure you could always raise the "I could just buy a Z06" argument. Hell, you could spent 10k on a civic and 5k on NOS and "smoke" a Porsche. But, your not driving a Porsche. And thats whats its all about. You are not buying a minivan, not a truck, not a family car. The Porsche is pretty much in a class by itself. You buy a Porsche because you WANT a Porsche, not because it was the best deal, most practical, most family fun, biggest cupholders, etc.
