Numbers On Sbc 350 Block
does anyone know how to read the stamped numbers on a small block chevy 350 block so i know what year the block is? it would be very helpful ,the is a set on stamped lettrs and numbers almost like a vin code. i just dont know how to figure out what year the block is, im 99% sure it is a 350 cu. inch block, but it could be a 305 cu. inch block, anyone know how to tell, it is bored .30 over, i want to rebuild it and do something with it, i want about 400 hp and 500 lbs. of torque. dont know what ill put it in, but i have plenty of time on my hands. only blought the block for 50 bucks with the crank and pisto
ns installed. sweet deal, thanks for the help later.
I know how to read them. Post the #'s that were cast in the block (not stamped, so the numbers you want are raised) that are on the back of the block on the passenger side of the engine, where the tranny bolts to block. Then, on the passenger side of the engine in the front, there will be a pad with some #'s stamped in there. Post them, I can decode to best of my ability. I'll be able to see if its a 350, 305, what it's most likely from, etc.
i think i figured it out, the block is a 1970 year, 350 2 bolt mains, was on a turbo 350 tranny, 2bbl, found out how to read block codes on from a website. if im wrong correct me, thanks for the help.
300 .lbs of torque is easy, 1970 was a good year for a sbc block, the motor stock had 250 hp in whatever car it was in, i am adding 4 bolt main caps. this motor will be built slowly by the best manufactorers products, my manager's show car is only a 2 bolt main sbc 350, hes putting down 475 hp to the wheels and its a rat motor, he just knows his ****, this guy (john haws) is a very gifted motorhead, but if he only was into rotaries
its not like im going to rev to 7 or 8 grand in first gear or neautral, the motor will be bolted to a t-56 6 speed manual tranny, when i say built, did i mention my manager has tortured the hell out of his, runs like a top.
maybe ill add 6 bolt main caps or is that a totally different gen of the sbc block?
