Don't get a VW if you want reliability. Another friend with a GOLF got rid of it after 1 year after it spent 2 months in the VW dealership with the district technican/engineer replacing the ECU, engine harness, engine, transmission and everything electrical because teh car randomly stalls out while going on the highway at 100 km/h (60 mph) and would not restart without a ECU reset.

trust me you aint getting no 35mpg with the Mazda.
The Honda will also have better resale value then the Mazda 3, Mazdas generally have bad resale value- let alone a entry level car like the 3.
Wait until the new testing goes into effect and see how cars REALLY get rated for fuel economy.

my dad's GTI is an 01 and still hasnt had ANY problems, other than the radio controlls on the steering wheel stopped working and they fixed that for free, no other problems than that. as long as you treat them nice they are nice back, and of course older vw's are tanks, we will see if dakmis chimes in on to the abuse my old gti got...

new testing? got a link? never heard about it.
i would stick with a honda, or a CPOV honda. i have dealt with many trade ins of old honda's and nissan's and some of them were 15 years old, and it still had great trade in value. had a little sentra with about 220k on the car, 5 speed, and it was worth 1.2k. and that was not even private party!!

I get the wall street journal at work, they tested a new Lexus RX330 in gas and hybrid form, and got IDENTICAL fuel economy with both.
