Welp, me and my cousin took an evo vIII out for a spin today. Went to the dealership, they ran a credit check on me, and some how i was approved? lol... anyways... they want 40k for it. Brand new, it was still in the back when i asked to drive it. We took it out, the low end is good, not awesome, but good. The top end sucks ass for 40k. I would blow its doors off on a freeway race. It has enough power to set you back in the seat a little, but not like the 7. The turning is awesome, i give that a 10. The launch is pretty good too... 0-60 was pretty dang fast. Over all I would say it is a good car for a 4 seater, and it looks cool too. But for 40k, i think i will buy something else.

Could just be because im used to the 7 ... but it did seem pretty slow for "271hp' and "275tq".

Turbo II 03-13-2003 05:09 PM

it has enough power going to all 4 wheels to laugh great. thats enough power for me

Rob x-7 03-13-2003 05:52 PM

keep in mind a all wheel drive vehicle does not squat and doesnt set you back

in your seat as much as a RWD vehicle. I remember driving a Porsche Carrera 4 and

I didnt realize how fast the car was until I looked at the speedo climbing.

Erik 03-13-2003 05:59 PM

my friend sent me a pic of a 20,000 markup! LOL...i'll have to find where it went...window sticker of over 50K!!!!!

cool that you got a test drive...so it was broken in already?

sidewinderx7 03-13-2003 06:04 PM

Nah, it was brand spankin new. I was the first guy to test drive it. I was watching the speedo too, it was climbing, just not as fast as the 7. I can go from 60, punch it, by the time i look down im at 100 and it goes right up to 120... Cool car though, just not my cup of tea for that much.

93 R1 03-13-2003 06:22 PM

I think they are ugly. No way I'd pay $40k either. I'd get a 350z https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

Shane.Trammell 03-13-2003 06:26 PM

they are 30,911 here

Rob x-7 03-13-2003 06:31 PM

who said a EVo VIII was in the same catagory as a FD anyhow?

the worst part about those cars is going to be the owners. like most of the wrx owners here, they think that it is the end-all-be-all and buddy.....it ain't, and the reality is JUST THAT HARSH......

at buttonwillow last week, a new EVO showed up for the track event as well. It has 750miles on it when it got there.

The car looks nice overall, I still like EVO 4 or 5 better. The interor was nice, but not my style.

Only the 2nd lap on the track the EVO was spinning off the track. The driver used to have a S2000, and he blaims that he is not use to the car. But around the track, I was passing it with no effort at all.

I don't think the car is worth what they are asking.

I agree on this too, they are not much different, Supra owners, WRX owners, and Muscle car owners are all the same~ https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/dry.png

Every popular car is going to have its fair share of punks and its fair share of cool people.

Like TurboII said, it's all about the driver.

Turbo II 03-20-2003 01:11 PM

ive had a friend drive a na mr2 against a toyta yercel and beat the tercel. the they switched drivers and the tercel beat the mr2. im not joking either, dead serious

Rob x-7 03-20-2003 06:39 PM

there are people out there who say **** like

"those RX-7 owners are such assholes"

its not the OTHER people, its the person THINKING the thoughts.

When you judge another, you define yourself.

Jerk_Racer 03-20-2003 09:31 PM

After riding in a fully suspension tuned Evo6 in Japan a couple of years ago, I know that there aren't many 7's that can touch one of these things in the twisties. The owner was a good driver too. The way we were flying through corners marked for 30km/h going about 100km/h sold me on them. This thing was stock under the hood. It has more than enough get up and go, but it was certainly not a straightline car. Riding in that thing would convince anyone of their worth. These cars in the right hands are very good. They do live up to the hype with the Japanese model, but since we don't get the AYC we'll never know how good they can be.

On a mountain road with a pair of good drivers, I'd put my money on the Evo. They're better than you'd think once they're modded. After all, who leaves their cars stock anyway? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png Too bad 99% of the owners over here will just do boring straight line stuff with them and never get them close to their limits. The ones that do will probably go beyond the limits and crash them.

BTW, they're clutch killers if you want a good launch.

onboost 03-20-2003 11:51 PM

BTW, they're clutch killers if you want a good launch.
if the wheel doesn't spin, the power has to go some where. or somthing breaks!

Travis R 03-21-2003 07:44 AM

Just to clarify, there was supposed to be a smiley after my "...RX7 owners..." comment. I don't know why it didn't show up. It was meant as a joke. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

I don't doubt the EVO is worth the sticker price... the problem is finding one for sticker. In Austin there is anywhere from $5K to over $8K in mark-up. With the options they are installing it makes them damn near $40K. Sorry, but they are not worth that much. Once the STi comes out, they will have no choice but to drop the price.

Jerk_Racer 03-21-2003 05:33 PM

No doubt. I remember when the Evo VII came out. A buddy of mine took a picture of the sticker price and with the dollar/yern rate at the time it was less than $23k. At that price I'd get it, but for $40k - Hell no! What something is "worth" is relative to the person that wants to buy it.

rx7machine 03-22-2003 02:09 PM

Whoa. I guess that does prove it's all abou the driver.. well at least a big part of it..

Tom93R1 03-22-2003 06:53 PM

As for EVOvii perfrormance, I heard that somebody had one at the local drag strip last night and he was running low14's. Arent they supposed to be faster than that? Guy probably doesnt know how to drive.

Jerk_Racer 03-23-2003 05:38 AM

The guy probably doesn't want to bust parts. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Joe Flo 03-23-2003 10:50 PM

I think it is fair to say....The era of fast turbocharged car is over. We will no longer see cars like the 300zx, supra or Rx-7. Not sure why but looking at all the concept cars worries me. Just look at the cars with turbos now....

VW's.....Neons.....And PT CRUISER!!!!! Its just sad https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/violin.gif

Midnightdriver 03-23-2003 11:00 PM

all the evo 8 is is a heavier underpowered , ugly front end evo 7..... its sucks that people will get it and think its the **** and not know how to drive it...or think that it is a true evo...WHEN ITS NOT... they added hundreds of pounds to it removed the selective diff. and added more emissions crap to it... why because the gov. actually tested the car and the rated 276-280 hp was more like a little over 300 and that they didn't like then they decided that it didnt have enough front end impact resistance...boom more weight..then went the lovely selective diff...why they say to lower price...me thinks to remove the temtation to use those neat little sport settings.....and that ugly ass front end? someone is high...granted its nice to get an evo here but it aint no evo 8...the whole evo concept was the evolution of the lancer..hence lancer evo.. each one being better than the last in some way be it a little bump in hp..and tq..or suspension..this so called 8 is a step back not forward..now that i'm done bashing it I'll talk some good about it...first all that needs to be done is remove that restrictive exh and add a good down pipe and free flowing exh 3 inch... remove the cats with a test pipe..a good electronic boost cont.. replace that shitty turbo and replace it with the intended turbo...the titanium twin scrool add a turbo timer and a good coil over suspension and you will be golden..hell the bug plus was that that car spike at 19psi then drops down that shows that that thing will be one good preformer with little tweeking...have that boost controler hold the boost at 15 psi that good exh better bov. and you'll have that thing preforming very well..but no way worth 40k... espacally when the sti will be sold here for 30k..but if I was going to spend 30k on a car it be a skyline R-32

Jerk_Racer 03-25-2003 04:24 AM

Midnightdriver - You are dead right about that ugly (looks like it was designed by Pontiac) nose. There is no shadowy government plot to stifle this car from being as badass as it can be. It didn't gain hundreds of pounds over the Evo 7. They've been gaining weight over the years and they continue to get better in spite of the weight. It's better than the WRX (it's only market competition) is and that's saying a lot. Kudos to Mitsubishi for finally having the sack to sell such a low volume car. It won't sell that many units compared to their other models, but it will be a great image car. So what if they lowered the power a bit? Who is going to leave it stock anyway? It already has lhandling limitations that most drivers won't ever master so who is going to miss that AYC? Especially if you've never driven one withh that setup. It'd be nice to have a choice, but that's not going to happen. It'll be worth the money to some and not others. It's all relative.

Plus, you wouldn't spend $40k on a $30k car, but would spend $30k on an old used/abused car that is less than $10k in it's home market but has been marked up far beyond belief? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif Get this - the $18k Skyline GTS-t that Motorex sells is about $2k~$3k in Japan and it's not much for performance compared to a stock turbocharged S13 chassis.

Rob x-7 03-26-2003 04:10 PM

I seen one today sitting outside my local dealer, I think its much better

looking then the Subie. Doesnt look that bad in person actually.

Midnightdriver 03-27-2003 08:15 PM

jerk racer...I'm well aware of the skyline prices I lived in japan for 3 years and bought my R-32 for 3500 tuned already. and read the motor trend that has the lancer 8 in it and the superstreet and other import mags that have the 7 in it the 8 is around 200 lbs more. even the motor trend mag says that its a few hundred pounds heavier...but i'm just picking it apart venting you know..hahah https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/tongue.png and I love the x-files kind of angle hahah cuz I'm an ass and work for them...

Midnightdriver 03-27-2003 08:20 PM

you are also right about it gainging pounds over the years...and I agree that its better than the wrx we got here and in canada.. but either way a choice would be good...I'll try to dig up that mag and post what it says so there are no mistakes...and motorex will legalize a skyline that you find over in japan an buy..but you pay the shipping and the 16k fee to legalize it...which is much better than the 20k they wanted in 99 when I left japan...I cryed when I sold that thing https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/violin.gif

Jerk_Racer 03-28-2003 03:37 AM

Where were you? I left Japan in '98 after being there over four years. I was in Okinawa. I thought that it was the end of the good Evo's when the Evo5 was released and it had gained about 100kg over the Evo4 which at the time was my favorite. I was wrong. It sucks that the Evo will have to lose the AYC because of evaporative emissions, but look on the bright side - what was available just a few years ago. Wait for five years and there'll be some good deals on cars that would be sweet for a build up. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

They can out lap a stock S2000, a stock WRX and a stock 350Z (road and track data)

sexxy7 04-10-2003 06:30 PM

Man, I hate Evo's too!!!! Someone actually compared it to a Mercedes CLK55!

I would certainly hope it could outlap a stock WRX... the Evo has more power, better tires, and much quicker steering.
