what happens to these things... wonder if they get scrapped or sent to a museum..

It depends on the manufacturer. Some will keep them, some sell them. My brother is taking auto tech courses at the community college. His teacher said that they get concepts and experimental vehicles donated to them to work on and play with. Then, when they are done, the vehicles have to either be donated to another school approved by the manufacturer or completely destroyed with photographic evidence of the car before, during, and after the crushing process.
