The reason the paint was so shitty was actually based off of the deoderant the techs wore in the paint booth beleive it or not. GM rememdied the problem, however, they still had issues up until 1995 with early paint deterioration.
That had to do with compatability of the primer/sealer bonding to the steel and the base/clear bonding to the primer. I think Dodge is now blessed with the same problem. As for the deodorant of the body man affecting the bonding capacity of the sprayed products in the booth, it sounds like a sackload of bullshit to me, but the boys at Mythbusters might have a go at it.

It was Ford too, slam the door on the right truck and the paint might fall off the door like a sheet of paper.
The GNX was the quickest car ever produced in America up to that point. It's entirely possible someone would pay $75,000 for that one, but I would agree it's better off at Barrett-Jackson.
Since when do they have no reserve there? Last time I watched it on SPEED they discussed the reserve price of many of the cars while they were being sold.

Maybe on the high end days (sat and sun) there is a reserve set on those cars but the part of the sale we are involved in, (Thursday) everything is sold no reserve.

Off topic a bit, but anyone here planning on attending Barrett-Jackson this year in Scottsdale? Im about an hour and a half away in Tucson, so I'll be there Thursday/Friday/Saturday. Be cool to meet up with some rotor heads.

that deodrant theory makes no sense whatsover.
The cars arent even sprayed by men, they are sprayed by robots
even if they did happen to be sprayed by men, what are the odds that everyone wore the same deodrant?
You could probably spray deodrant while painting a car and it wouldnt cause the paint to alegate all over like it did on those cars
Lots of manufacturers had problems with paints in the 80's, due to the introduction of low VOC primers and paints, as well as waterborne paints.

In fact although stock pain nowdays it durable, it still can't compare to a well done pain job by hand in a booth.
Factory pain is so worried about overspray and orangepeel they just made it thin, and in the 90's the figured out how to make it work. Most honda's from the 80's suffered from orange peel.
Wasn't the standard gran national rated somewhere around 300 hp (let me go do some research before I finish typeing...ok 245 at thier peak, other than the GNX models). The GNX had 276. Sure beats the mustangs of the day. It might even give the underrated 93 cobra a run for it's money. But that's quite a year gap.
Truly and impressive machine.

didn't the Regal T-Types have the same engine as the G-Nationals? they should be a less expensive option and with a little more color choices (i think they were available in white and charcoal - at least those are the only other colors i've seen)

WOW! I don't know how I missed this before, truly impressive
The burout on the dyno was insane! 1076HP to the street, in a full burnout!
Work out the traction issues and that car would be unbelievable at the track.
