89 5.0 LX
#1
A buddy of mine from high school just got out of the navy and came back home to go to college. He just traded in his F150 for an '89 5.0 LX, and he wants to race me. I told him he would totally smoke me, but I'd give it a shot sometime anyhow.
What I want to know is, are the LX models any different from the GT in terms of HP? What other differences exist between the two other than the body crap on the GT?
Twin89Stangs, I figured you'd know best, so lets have it!

ok lets see here...
1989 LX 5.0
225hp
290ft lbs of tq
Depending on drivetrain and Bodytype
1/4 mile times between 15.4 to 13.7
Most in the mid to high 14's.
The difference between LX's and GT's in 89 was....
LX
10 hole rims
4 cylinder style seats
No bodykit
Stainless steel rear piping
Tending to weigh less
GT
Turbine rims
power seats
Body kit
turndown style exhaust
Weighs more.
Lets put it this way....
The fastest mustang from 79-93 was the 88 Mustang Coupe 5.0 5 spd. Running through the clocks at 13.7 at 100mph
I am one of the heaviest Fox bodied stangs and have run a personal best of 14.4 with only cold air intake and cooling fans as mods.
The 5 spds with the 3.08 rear gearing and setup in coupe body styles can make ya think twice. Cornering is only decent. In a race with turns you may have a chance. But any kind of upgraded suspension on a Coupe and you will not hold any ground at all. But if he is all stock and you do a twisty back road you may be able to take him out... straight line.... sorry...
He should be in the 14's and I believe your car is 16 second capable...
If he is an auto you may be able to get a jump on him off the line. But that will probably be the end. But then again this is all assuming both of you are stock as can be...
Hope that helps....
Just so ya know here are some Dyno #'s....
auto
HP 179-185hp at the rear wheels
TQ 260-270lb ft
5 spd
Hp 187-195
TQ 273-290ft lbs hard to say but this is around where most mustangs seem to be on a dyno....
Obviously the 5 spds make a fair amount more power than the AOD equipped stangs and weigh slightly less. AOD cars are not that great. With a shift kit they can be fast but they still have a fair amount of drag on them.
Weight also varies on Stangs of these years...
2850lbs to around 3400 which is about where I am....
Here is what I am roughly at
3478lbs or so give or take thats what I was told by Ford.
1989 Mustang GT Convertible
5.0
5 spd
2.73 rear gearing
Every option
I turn roughly 14.4's like this!

I pretty much figured that he'd smoke me in a standard straight line drag. Thanks for the info, maybe I can lure him into some backroads...
Oh, another question for you: There is another guy I know with an SVT Focus that's talking mad smack to me. Now, I know the SVT folks put all their tricks into the Focus for that rig, but from what I've seen stats-wise, it looks like it would come down to driver skill. What do you think?

SVT focus
2.0 175hp
1/4 time 15.4
0-60 7.4 with a good driver
But a VERY GOOD backroad car. Every bit capable. Can outhandle RSX Type S VW GTI Celica GTS etc. Be careful. Those are more into handling than straight line but they can be pretty fast. I know someone on here already killed on.. think it was 13bace.. not sure... But they are very much at home on a road course... with a redline of 7200 they can pull pretty high too.... Sorry could not find any slalom tests or any of those.
But yes you may be able to get him. Most of the SVT Focus' making it out have the winter package which slows them down to 15.7 in the 1/4 due to an undefeatable traction control.

Of course, I'll probably look like a dorkass if I go talking a bunch of **** and then lose.

I know they handle well.... they are designed to hang with and exceed most imports in their category's handling and cornering. So while straight line as not all that impressive. On the track they are more impressive.
Also a comp prep SVT focus is in the works... may be produced.....
